Charity bike ride for camp where seriously ill kids can ‘raise a little hell’

Over the years I’ve reported on quite a few charity bike rides at this blog, as well as published an exhaustive list of charity bike rides from across the US.

Now it’s time for me to step up and raise pledges for a charity bike ride I’m supporting.

This September I’ll be riding in the Camp Challenge, a charity bike ride to raise funds and awareness for Camp Korey, which serves children with life-altering medical conditions. I know about the camp out in the Snoqualmie Valley because my daughter has been attending one-week summer camps there for the past three years.

Paige (that’s her in the blue T-shirt in the upper right photo) has great fun ….

3 bike travelers hit by truck in Georgia; 1 dead

Sad news from Georgia where three bicycle touring friends in their 60s were hit by a tractor-trailer rig on Thursday morning. The three were nearing the end of a two-year, 6,000-mile bike adventure from Prudhoe Bay to Key West.

One, Peter Cornell, 64, of Port Charlotte, Fla., was killed in the collision. He was originally …

Cross-country bike travelers experience horror in theater shooting

Here’s a photo of a couple of college-age bicyclists who don’t appear to have a care in the world as they set out from Virginia Beach in early June on a cross-country bike adventure.

Six weeks later they’re sitting in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater where a man opens fire on the crowd with assault …

Heat relief for RAGBRAI arrives with torrential thunderstorms

The triple digit heat that plagued the 10,000 bicycle riders in the 40th Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) was erased on Wednesday by overnight thunderstorms.

Although touted as one of the easier RAGBRAI’s in terms of terrain, the weather appears to present the biggest challenge on this year’s 471-mile bike tour.

Iowa is in the midst of a severe drought that threatens …

RAGBRAI bike tour celebrating 40th birthday this week

You know how it goes: One day it’s just a small event with a couple of hundred people along for the ride. Then the next thing you know it’s 40 years old with thousands of bike riders joining in.

In a nutshell, that’s the history of RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

Rest in peace, Cookie Lady

Just learned the sad news that June Curry, the “Cookie Lady,” died on Monday at age 91.

This wonderful lady was the personal friend to the thousands of touring bicyclists who passed through Afton, Virginia, on the Trans America Bicycle Route since its inception in 1976. The walls of her home were papered with postcards …

Senior couple’s inspiring bicycle tour

As the years mount up for me, I get more and more interested in seeing how many older folks are remaining active on their bicycles.

One example is Jerry and Shirley Smith, who at 73 and 72, respectively, are riding a tandem on a cross-country bike tour that roughly follows the Northern Tier bicycle route.

Cyclists on that route all know about the beauty and hardships of crossing the Cascades and Rockies. This year, heavy rain, high wind and record heat has been added to the mix.

That’s no different for the Newton, Kansas, couple …

New route for final day of Ride the Rockies bike tour will avoid wildfire

The route-meisters for this week’s Ride the Rockies bike tour revised Friday’s final day route to bypass the High Park wildfire that’s blackened 47,000 acres west of Fort Collins.

Earlier in the week, organizers of the six-day tour of 2,000 bicyclists thought they might have to find another final destination or cancel the last day’s ride altogether.

The new route simply leaves Estes Park on Friday morning and heads further east before heading north to Fort Collins …

Seattle to Portland (STP) registration reopens on Monday

Don’t be left out this year. The Cascade Bicycle Club is reopening online registration for the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic at 12:01 a.m. (that’s one minute after midnight) on Monday.

The popular 200-mile bike ride from Seattle to Portland sold out on Feb. 21 this year when the last of 10,000 registrations were snatched up.

Enough of those early birds have requested refunds, however, that Cascade is reopening registration ….
