Bicycling the 2-mile Challenge

I've always been reluctant to jump on a corporate bandwagon to support a cause, but this one makes so much sense that I think it deserves recognition.

It's the 2-Mile Challenge sponsored by Clif Bar. Essentially, it encourages people to ride their bicycles instead of drive their cars on trips within a radius of 2 miles from home, which accounts for 40% of all urban travel.

According to a video on the 2-Mile Challenge website, if 1 million people replaced a 2-mile car trip with a bicycle ride once a week, carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 50,000 tons per year.

Seven new “Bicycle Friendly” cities chosen

Feeling a little beleaugured by traffic or poor road design on your morning bicycle commute or ride to the store?

Rest assured that somewhere in the US, seven cities are being honored in 2007 by the League of American Bicyclists as new “bicycle friendly communities” for their efforts to integrate bicycles into the fabric of city life.

Certainly leading the list in terms of population and impact is New York City. Others receiving the Bronze-level designation are Lexington-Fayette County, Kentucky; Liberty Lake, Washington; Santa Clarita, Cal., and Spartanburg, S.C.

Two cities received the higher ranked silver award. They were Santa Cruz, Cal., and Steamboat Springs, Colo…..

If you need proof the world is going crazy

A couple of blog items involving bicyclists convinces me that things are as bad as ever out on the streets.

The LAist blog writes about a cyclist getting handcuffed by police after his bicycle was damaged by a bus and Cyclelicious had an item about a struck cyclist who shoots at a motorist ….

What the Tour of Missouri means to cyclists

Tour of Missouri on Versus cable network: 4-6 p.m. (ET) Wednesday

Young fans meet racers

One of the major goals of the Tour of Missouri bike race this year was to boost tourism to the Show Me state.

But the bicycle race had the spillover effect of introducing a lot of folks to professional cyclists and winning a slight measure of respect for those who ride their bikes on Missouri's streets.

Blog reader Jack Painter wrote to me after the race that his family members were thrilled to meet many of the racers. And Kansas City Star columnist Bill Graham writes that following the race, “We need to keep working on making bicycling a bigger pastime in our communities.” …

Bellevue (WA) unveils draft bicycle plan on Thursday

The folks at the Bellevue transportation department are planning to release the details of the 2007 Walk & Roll Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan on Thursday.

The city is basing its recommendations partly on a survey and focus groups from earlier this year. The staff is suggesting where bicycling improvements can be made and how to get them funded.

The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bellevue City Hall, 450 110th Ave. N.E., Room 1E-108. If you're like me and can't make the meeting, the draft will be posted online after the meeting at the Bellevue transportation website (2007 Ped-Bike Plan.)….

“Share the Road for Rachel” campaign

Last weekend marked the one-year anniversary of the death of 15-year-old North Carolina resident Rachel Giblin on a charity bicycle ride in South Carolina.

As the Breakaway to the Beach went off again as scheduled, Rachel's parents talked about their efforts to raise the awareness of motorists to make things safer for bicyclists on the road.

The family has launched a website entitled “Share the Road for Rachel,” and they're distributing magnets and stickers with that slogan. More than 1,000 have gone out so far….

Going too far to enforce helmet laws?

Here is a tale of two cities, one in the real world and another in the Bizarro World; one that rewards for helmet use and another that considers punishing accident victims for not wearing a helmet.

The first is Salina, Kansas, where firefighters are handing out candy coupons from a local grocer to bicyclists who are wearing helmets. Nice and positive.

The other is a suburb of Toronto where police are considering charging a 16-year-old cyclist for not wearing a helmet after she was struck by a truck. They want to interview her about it, but she's still unconscious

Checking online first to check if that used bicycle is stolen

Websites like Craigslist and eBay could be unintentionally sparking a rise in bicycle thefts, reports the Washington Post on today's front page story, “As web fuels bike thefts, victims turn vigilante.”

That's probably not much of a headline to people who regularly visit these websites, often in search of their stolen bikes.

There are a few websites, however, that list stolen bicycles that you should probably check if you're thinking of buying a used bicycle online…

Minneapolis bicycle bridge reopens, but mainly for viewing

The Dinkytown Bicycle Connection has reopened in Minneapolis just downriver from the fallen I-35 bridge, although the east access remains closed and there's no through-traffic allowed.

Even so, bicyclists and pedestrians are using the bridge to view the wreckage of the collapsed bridge over the Mississippi River and maybe pay their respects to those who died.

The Dinkytown bridge, also known as Bridge No. 9, connects the west and east sides of the University of Minnesota. Access from the western side was reopened on Tuesday, although the east access is shut down while construction is underway….

King County (WA) voters support bike trails

East Lake Sammamish Trail

Regional bike trails in Seattle's King County won big in measures on Tuesday's ballot.

Two propositions to raise $108.5 million each over six years for maintenance and expansion of parks and regional trails won easily.

The East Lake Sammamish River Trail will be one of the big benefactors of the funding. The 11-mile chipped limestone rail-to-trail project that opened in March 2006 connects Redmond and Issaquah. It will be upgraded and paved …
