Ousted Cascade director Chuck Ayers is back on interim basis

A week after the Cascade Bicycle Club board of directors fired executive director Chuck Ayers, left, the board is bringing him back as interim director.

Two members at the Cascade message forum said that board member Don Volta made the announcement to a meeting of ride leaders on Sunday. That was confirmed this morning in an interview with a ride leader who attended that meeting. A Cascade staff member also confirmed Ayers is returning on an interim basis.

The Cascade Bicycle Club confirmed the rehiring in an announcement late Tuesday afternoon:

“Following many discussions over the last week between the Cascade Bicycle Club Board of Directors and Chuck Ayers, a new agreement has been reached that includes Chuck returning to the organization as interim Executive Director. Chuck will serve for a period of at least six months ….

Some 100,000 use bikes and feet in CicLAvia event

A 7 1/2-mile stretch of Los Angeles pavement was closed to cars and other motor vehicles on Sunday in an inaugural ciclovia event that exceeded everyone's expectations.

An estimated 100,000 people walked or rode their bikes, skateboards, or rollerblades on the closed thoroughfares from East Hollywood, through downtown, and out to Boyle Heights on Sunday. The LA Times dutifully noted that police and fire departments reported no incidents.

Called CicLAvia, it was the latest in a series of events based on the Bogota …

Top 10 big cities for bicycle commuting

About 1 commuter out of 200 used a bicycle as the primary mode of transportation to get to work in 2009, a figure that didn't change one iota since 2008.

Meanwhile, the number of commuters who admit to driving alone to work rose by 1% in the same time frame to 76 out of 100.

That's quite a disparity and shows why bike advocates are pressing for more projects to be built that encourage people to ride their bicycles as transportation.

These results are taken from the American Community Survey conducted annually by the US Census Bureau. The League of American Bicyclists parsed the commuting data ….

A tragic 10 weeks for Tampa Bay bicyclists

Six bicyclists have been killed on Tampa Bay area roads in the past 10 weeks, an alarming number in a state that already leads the nation in bicycling fatalities.

The most recent death occurred on Friday, when an out-of-control car careened into a woman standing on the curb with her bicycle while waiting to use the crosswalk. She was killed instantly.

Later that day, Tampa Bay cyclists were to make a 15-mile ride to memorialize five persons who had died while bicycling since July 29. Instead, they rode for six.

On Wednesday, the Hillsborough County commissioners directed the county staff to work with the municipalities to make area roads safer for bicycling …

Change at the top of Cascade Bicycle Club; Chuck Ayers is out

After 13 years at the helm of the Cascade Bicycle Club, executive director Chuck Ayers is leaving his position as head of the Seattle-based bicycle club.

The club's board of directors asked for Ayers's resignation as head of the 14,000-member bicycle club, considered the largest in the nation. He declined, and the board fired him.

Chris Weiss, chair of the board, was quoted at the Cascade blog:

“While we are grateful for these and other accomplishments during his tenure, the Board has made the decision that Chuck is no longer the right person to lead Cascade into its next phase of growth and opportunity.”…..

Quote: Landis says he waited too long to tell truth

“I knew that having defended myself in the beginning, and having lied about never having doped, that no matter when I changed the story and no matter when I decided to tell the details of what I'd done, the argument was always going to be the same. It was going to be that I shouldn't be believed now.

“It took me longer than it probably should have.”

Pro cyclist Floyd Landis speaking at New Pathways for Pro Cycling conference held by Deakin University at Geelong….

Rails-to-Trails petitions AAA on bicycle and pedestrian projects

Are you a member of the American Automobile Association? It's OK. Lots of bicyclists, myself included, are members.

We own cars and like the security of the roadside assistance that the club offers, as well as the travel and insurance coverage services.

Now the Rails to Trails Conservancy is concerned about a position taken by the AAA's Mid-Atlantic Chapter to remove funding for trails, and other biking and walking projects, from the federal Highway Trust Fund. That segment of the transportation budget has been the source of funding for such balanced transportation projects since 1991.

RTC is asking bicyclists and pedestrians to sign a petition to AAA seeking the auto club's support

Update: Bicycle ban on roads in Missouri county fails to pass

Update: Sept. 28, 2010 — St. Charles County councilmembers voted down a proposed ban on bicycle-riding on some county roads

After a series of public hearings in which the bicycling public had its say, a bill to ban bicycle riding on several roads in St. Charles County, Missouri, has lost the support of most councilmembers.

Bicycling advocates warn, however, that cyclists aren't rolling onto smooth roads yet. The proposed ban prompted several other bills that pose unwarranted restrictions on bicyclists.

The bill was introduced in July by County Councilman Joe Brazil and was aimed at narrow, two-lane, shoulderless roads in the southwestern part of the county …

Candlelight vigil Friday for Maryland cyclist killed in hit-and-run

While observers wonder how a motorist could have struck a bicyclist on a suburban Maryland road and driven home with the bicycle lodged under the SUV, the victim's mother is planning a candlelight vigil at the scene on Friday.

Natasha Pettigrew, 30, died late Monday night from injuries she suffered when she was struck from behind by a Cadillac Escalade while she was on a training ride at 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Pettigrew was the Green Party candidate for the US Senate seat in Maryland.

The 41-year-old driver of the car told the Maryland State Police that she thought she hit an animal in the roadway. According to Greg Shipley, a Maryland State Police spokesman:

“She had driven to her home and called from her home. The initial indication was that she thought she may have hit a deer or an animal in the roadway. ….
