I’ve started riding a recumbent bike due to a back condition. My bucket list includes seeing the United States from my bike. I have two questions; Could I handle many of these trails with a recumbent bike? How do I join up with other people to do the tours?

  1. Hey Paulette… In my opinion, you could ride any of these routes with a recumbent. The only time I’d count out a recumbent is on mountain biking single track. With slightly wider tires, you could even ride on gravel and dirt roads. I’ve heard the only issue with recumbents is riding uphill…. it just goes a little slower. ‘Bents excel on downhills and flat terrain, though.

As for finding other recumbent riders, I’d check out the recumbent section at Bike Forums as well as BentRiderOnline.com.

  2. I’ll add one to the list.

    The Empire State Ride http://empirestateride.com/

I rode all 7 days in 2017 and it’s an incredible ride. You start off on a ferry crossing right in front of the Statue of Liberty and finish at Niagara Falls.

    It’s a growing ride (100 riders in 2017) and 140 in 2018).

It’s fully supported from food, to lodging, mechanics, showers, everything. Great experience for a better cause where all funds go towards cancer research at Roswell Park.

If you’ve never ridden in NYS it’s gorgeous.
