A Dutch cyclist survived on the final, short climb of a crash-plagued Stage 5 as the Giro d'Italia favorites waited for each other to take the initiative.
The stage victory for Rabobank's Pieter Weening, 30, also made him the overall race leader in Wednesday's bike race from Piombino to Orvieto.
The 191km (118-mile) route through the Tuscany region of Italy included about 12 miles of dirt, which caused some sketchy cycling and a number of crashes ….

As the Giro d'Italia bike race gets back more or less to normal on Wednesday, the peloton will face two climbs in the 191km (118-mile) cycling route from Piombino to Orvieto.
Both are Category 3 and conspire to classify Stage 5 as a “moderate mountain” stage. It's time for the real battle for the green mountain points jersey, held by Gianluca Brambilla (Colnago), to begin.

Weylandt's best friend in the peloton, Tyler Farrar of Wenatchee, WA, is planning to leave the Giro at the completion of the stage. The two became friends and training partners in Farrar's European home base of Ghent. …

Many cyclists shared their feelings about cyclist Wouter Weylandt as the horror of what happened in Stage 3 of the Giro d'Italia began to sink in. Monday was a truly sad day in cycling.
It was unknown how the peloton plans to honor the fallen cyclist. In times past, cyclists have ridden the stage following a death en masse, much like the Ride of Silence. Race organizers said they will adhere to the peloton's wishes.
One of Weylandt's friends was Tyler Farrar, the Wenatchee, WA, native who now makes his home in Ghent, Belgium. That was also the home for the Belgian cyclist ….
