Crashes, antelope races and saddle sores at RAAM

Here it is Thursday evening, four days after Sunday's start of the Race Across America for solo cyclists, and Jure Robic has passed the halfway point in the 3,000-mile race.

Robic is the 43-year-old ultra-endurance athlete from Slovenia who is attempting his fourth solo win at RAAM. Early estimates put him across the finish line in Annapolis, Maryland, sometime on Monday afternoon or evening.

The live coverage of RAAM notes that Robic had been bucking stiff winds in western Kansas overnight, yet he's still some 180 miles ahead of the closest three solo men trailing him — David Haase, Mark Pattinson, Julian Sanz Garcia. From the start in Oceanside on Sunday, Robic is averaging 15.2 mph, including catnaps …

Spring is best time for bicycling Glacier National Park

Spring is the best time of year for bicycling Glacier National Park in northern Montana.

That's when adventurous bicyclists celebrate the few weeks that the high-country roads are passable, but gates block access to all motor vehicle traffic except snow plows.

It's especially true on the popular Going-to-the-Sun Road that runs through the park and up and over Logan Pass. This route gets so busy that restrictions for bicycles are posted during the summer months …

Bicycling in BRAG heats up

While week-long bicycle riders across Nebraska (BRAN) and South Dakota (Tour de Kota) have been facing wind and cool temperatures this week, Bicycle Ride Across Georgia cyclists are sweltering in the heat.

Temperatures are hovering in the upper 90s for cyclists riding the 413 miles from Oxford (east of Atlanta) to St. Simon's Island on the coast, where the temperature is finally expected to be cooler.

One of the oldest cross-state bike tours, this is the 29th year for BRAG, which is seeing participation up a couple of hundred riders from last year. Registration is about 1,800 riders, which includes the three-day BRAG Lite cyclists …

BikeTown USA returns to Pacific Northwest and California

Would a new bicycle set you free?

Just explain how in an essay and you might just win a new set of wheels if you live in Seattle, Portland or San Francisco.

The three cities are among five that have been chosen in Bicycling magazine's BikeTown USA this year. The others are Columbus, Ohio, and Lincoln, Nebraska …

Leipheimer and Hincapie winners in France

For those of you keeping score at home, US cyclists are tearing up the early stages of the Dauphiné Libéré that's happening through Sunday this week in France.

On Sunday, Astana's Levi Leipheimer beat the field to win the prologue into Avignon. He previously wore the yellow jersey this year as winner of the Tour of California.

On Tuesday, High Road's George Hincapie won Stage 2 in Vienne by launching an attack about a kilometer from the finish. The strong rider held off the field, avoiding a mass sprint at the finish. …

Bike tours rolling through Nebraska and South Dakota

You better not dawdle on the Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska this week, or else you might get “the clapper.”

That's the wake-up call from Kelly Smith, a volunteer who rides in a SAG wagon. The clapper is a plastic noise-maker that Smith shakes to encourage cyclists who look tired or are getting beaten down by headwinds on this week's BRAN that's covering 454 miles.

Smith, you'll know him by his coonskin cap, is just one of the volunteers helping the 600-some cyclists in this year's ride that runs through Saturday.

Meanwhile, some 425 cyclists are plowing across eastern South Dakota in the 4th annual Argus Leader Tour de Kota. About 300 more are riding shorter versions of the week-long bike tour…

Versus covering Tour de France through 2013

The only cable TV channel you'll need to watch the Tour de France in the US and Canada for the next five years is Versus.

The cable broadcast network won the contract to continue televising the race after this year; they're either very lucky or no one else wanted it.

Ratings have dropped since the days of Lance Armstrong, but apparently Versus programmers see enough interest out there to continue scheduling 14 hours of coverage a day beginning July 5 and running through July 27 (last year was 16 hours). …
