Who are the favorites?

Can it just be two years ago that everyone was camping on Lance Armstrong's doorstep asking who he liked in the 2006 Tour de France?

That was his first year in retirement, and I think he started out saying that Jan Ullrich looked good. Then he said Jan was looking a little out of shape — too many dumplings? — but Ivan Basso was the one to beat. Then they both got the heave-ho before the Tour de France started.

As the Tour de France starts this morning, Armstrong is saying he likes Cadel Evans, an Aussie on the Silence-Lotto team. Evans finished second last year, right between Alberto Contador and Levi Leipheimer. As members of Astana, they can't race this year …

Clothes make the team at the 2008 Tour de France

The two US-based cycling teams at the 2008 Tour de France both have new sponsors that are taking over as the three-week race begins Saturday.

New sponsors means new team kits, and those were unveiled recently.

At left is Christian Vande Velde wearing the Garmin-Chipotle jersey. It keeps the argyle motif from Slipstream, so I don't see much of a change. More pictures at the team's website.

That's George Hincapie at right modeling the new Team Columbia jersey. The original team colors were basically white with High Road in red block letters. This keep the solid look, but the color is different. Credit TDWsport.com …

An upcoming big bike ride motivates; June stats

In January last year I announced my intention to ride 4,000 miles in 2007. I can blame some medical problems in the late summer and fall for keeping me off the bike for about two months, but honestly, at this time last year I was seriously off pace.

I announced the same goal for 2008, and now I'm actually slightly ahead of the game.

What's the difference? I'm motivated this year by training for the Seattle-to-Portland bike ride that rolls out of the University of Washington parking lot in just nine days. My son, pictured carbo-loading above, is joining me.

I love bicycling, but I loathe suffering on a bicycle. And I've done plenty of suffering.

There are vivid memories of saddle sores, aching legs, sore back and neck, numb hands. When I first started riding longer miles as an adult about 30 years ago, hitting the wall was just part of the ride. ….

Five from Pacific Northwest on US Olympic cycling team

It's time for me to play the “homey sports fan” now.

Five cyclists from Washington, Oregon and Idaho were chosen by USA Cycling to represent the US at the Beijing Summer Olympics in August.

The five are Kristin Armstrong, 34, of Boise, Idaho on the road race and ITT, Jennie Reed, 30 of Kirkland, Washington, in the match sprint, Adam Craig, 26, of Bend, Oregon, in the men's mountain bike, Georgia Gould, 28, of Ketcham, Idaho, in women's mountain bike, and Jill Kintner, 26, of Seattle in women's BMX.

Congratulations to you all. We'll be cheering for you in August.

Armstrong earned her spot on the Olympic team by winning a silver medal in the time trial at the 2007 world championships last September. A graduate of University of Idaho, she discovered that she suffered from osteoarthritis. She stopped competing as a triathlete and focused on cycling

George Hincapie is first 5-time Olympic cyclist from U.S.; others on Team USA

George Hincapie may have helped Lance Armstrong set a historic 7 Tour de France wins, but Hincapie set his own mark when USA Cycling nominated the 35-year-old to the U.S. Olympic cycling squad for an unprecedented 5th time.

Others on the list for men's road cycling are Levi Leipheimer, Jason McCartney, Christian Vande Velde and David Zabriskie.

In all, 21 male and female cyclists were chosen for 24 spots on the team. The other disciplines include track cycling, bicycle motocross (BMX), and mountain bike.

A cool thing for my hometown crowd is that five cyclists from the Pacific Northwest were chosen for the Olympic cycling team …..

Floyd Landis loses appeal

The Court of Arbitration for Sport announced this morning that it has rejected Floyd Landis's appeal of the doping case raised after the 2006 Tour de France.

The decision by the Switzerland-based board means that earlier rulings against Landis stand. The 32-year-old American cyclist had previously lost his championship for the 2006 Tour de France and had been banned from professional cycling for two years, beginning Jan. 30, 2007.

The CAS also ruled that Landis must pay the US Anti-Doping Agency $100,000 for the costs it incurred in fighting the latest Landis appeal…
