The ubiquitous “they” are always saying that summer is a great time to read books. I guess that's advice for people who vacation at the beach or need relaxation between weed-pulling efforts in the garden.
For a bicycling enthusiast who splits his time between watching the Tour de France, preparing for the next bike ride, riding, and keeping the family happy, summer seems like a more difficult season to find reading time.
Here are four bicycling books that I should make some time to read. They're suggestions from the Seattle Public Library in the Shelf Talk blog. Honestly, I've never heard of any of them, but they all sound worth pulling off the shelf …..

Strong rides in the 18-mile individual time trial on Tuesday catapulted Christian Vande Velde and George Hincapie into 6th and 7th place overall at the Tour de France.
But it was Germany's Stefan Schumacher riding for Gerolsteiner who stole the show at Stage 4 in Cholet with his stage win, which also put him in first place in the general classification, just 12 seconds ahead of Team Columbia's Kim Kirchen.
In fact, half the riders in the top 10 are members of the two US-based team in this year's Tour de France. Here's the overall Top 10 breakdown with the US teams bold-faced ….

US cyclist and Tour de France freshman Will Frischkorn, right, finished second on Stage 3 at the Tour de France on Monday in a hard fought 3-man sprint.
The move catapulted him into 3rd place overall from down in 122nd at the beginning of the day. What an amazing finish for a guy who showed up for his first Tour de France as a domestique on a continental cycling team.
The 27-year-old cyclist for Garmin-Chipotle was a member of a four-man breakaway that survived for the entire 129-mile stage from Saint Malo to Nantes. He received the “most aggressive rider” of the day award.
That breakaway included stage winner Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) and the new overall leader, Romain Feillu of Agritubel, who won the yellow jersey from Alejandro Valverde …

Bicyclists riding in this year's RAGBRAI won't find any route changes because of last month's severe flooding, organizers report.
The roads are high and dry for the bike tour across Iowa that rolls out July 20-26; host cities missed the worst of the flood damage although some pass-through towns are still cleaning up.
The 9,000 bicyclists in the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa will be riding past some higher than normal creeks and many fields are still under water. Some towns will be spraying for mosquitoes around the campgrounds for this year's ride…

Update: I can't swear that this is going to work for you Monday morning, but on Sunday I was able to find live video streaming of the Tour de France with commentary in English. Your company may frown upon you doing this while you're getting paid to work, but in the interests of full disclosure, here's what I did: …

Although it appeared that Stage 2 of the Tour de France might belong to the French, Norway's Thor Hushovd won the drive to the finish in Saint Brieuc on Sunday.
The 30-year-old cyclist for Credit Agricole beat two Team Columbia riders at the finish, after the peloton finally swept up the last of a four-man French breakaway with about 1 kilometer to go.
Alejandro Valverde held onto the leader's yellow jersey. The Spanish cyclist on Caisse d'Epargne stayed at the front of the peloton with his team the entire day, and actually entered the sprint at the finish to protect his jersey. ….

Memo to World Anti-Doping Agency: Don't bother to check Alejandro Valverde for performance enhancing drugs. Check his bicycle for hidden rockets.
The 28-year-old team leader for Caisse d'Epargne blasted up the final climb into Plumelec to grab the Stage 1 win and yellow jersery in the 2008 Tour de France on Saturday.
Valverde, with eight wins this season before today, had been one of the race favorites. Now he and his team are saddled with protecting the lead. Another favorite on everyone's list, Cadel Evans of Silence-Lotto, stayed at the front of the peloton and finished comfortably in 6th place at the end of the day.
For the briefest moment, it looked like US-based Team Columbia might score the Stage 1 win with Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg. …

I'm just sitting here struck slack-jawed dumb after reading in CyclingNews that Bjarne Riis, who admitted that doping helped him win the 1996 Tour de France, has been reinstated as the official winner.
“We cannot rewrite history. Therefore we recognise Bjarne Riis as the winner of the 1996 Tour de France. But with an asterisk,” said Philippe Sudres, media director for the Tour de France to Danish magazine Politiken.
“Now he appears again in his earlier spot, but not exactly the same as the other winners. Immediately under his name we have written that he has admitted to doping during the Tour in 1996, but that the admission came so late, that according to the rules it cannot influence the result. Thus, on these grounds we have reinstated him as winner.”
Being a lowly blogger, I don't have access to the official media guide. So I did the next best thing and checked the official online history at the official Le Tour website …
