Mark Cavendish wins 3rd Tour de France stage; Evans still in yellow

Mark Cavendish is rewriting the record books during this year's Tour de France. On Thursday he became the first British cyclist to ever win three stages in one Tour.

Riding behind a lead-out by his US-based Team Columbia as the peloton entered Narbonne, Cavendish accelerated from the front of the pack and easily won.

The overall battle of the yellow jersey remained unchanged, as Cadel Evans maintained his 1-second lead and his rivals all finished in the same time in the peloton.

The 23-year-old sprinter from the Isle of Man, which sits off England's coast, previously won stages 5 and 8 …

Two-time stage winner Ricco accused of drug use; his team drops out

Italian Riccardo Ricco is out of the Tour de France after being accused of using the performance-enhancing drug — EPO.

The 24-year-old cyclist sat in ninth place overall and had won two stages at this year's Tour. His entire team, Saunier-Duval, opted to pull out of the race.

Ricco is the third cyclist to be accused of using EPO during this …

CSC wins its first 2008 Tour de France stage; Evans still in yellow

The rivals for the overall lead of the Tour de France took a back seat to the breakaway in the last stage in the Pyrennes on Wednesday.

With a margin of more than 15 minutes over the main field, Norwegian cyclist Kurt Alse Arvesen, left, won a three-man sprint to the finish in Foix. It was the first stage victory at this year's Tour for Team CSC.

The results of the 12-man breakaway didn't affect the battle for the yellow jersey, however, as Cadel Evans remained in first, followed by Frank Schleck, then Christian Vande Velde of the US …

Cyclist rides hood of car in Portland road rage

Screaming, yelling and an alert homeowner who is a photographer combined to give us this glimpse into an act of road rage in Portland between a cyclist and a motorist.

Yes, that's the cyclist on the hood of the car and hanging onto the windshield wipers for dear life.

According to reports, a bicyclist yelled at a passing motorist in a Ford Escort to slow down. The driver took offense at the suggestion and started chasing him …

Leipheimer captures Cascade Cycling Classic championship

Hungry to dine at the Tour de France but not allowed a seat at that table, Levi Leipheimer took his appetite to the Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend, Oregon, and gobbled down the competition.

The US cyclist who won the Tour of California in February is a member of Team Astana, which Tour de France organizers jilted from the world's biggest race. Not wanting his top form this year to go to waste, Leipheimer headed back to the 6-stage Cascade bike race where he won his first stages in the late 1990s.

Among the Astana team members, he was joined only by Chris Horner. The domestique to Australia's Cadel Evans before switching to Astana, Horner will be remembered for helping another cyclist to a mountaintop finish — on his back. Something he never did for Evans …

Who is this Christian Vande Velde?

I love it when the unsung, work-a-day athlete suddenly scores it big in any sport. That happened May 10 when Christian Vande Velde earned the maglia rosa at the 2008 Giro d'Italia.

And it has been happening at the 2008 Tour de France, where Vande Velde has exploded out of the peloton and into the realm of the favorites, sitting in 3rd place overall after the 10th Stage.

Ever since I started this bicycling blog in 2005, the name Christian Vande Velde has come up repeatedly among US cyclists competing in elite competitions in Europe and the US.

But he never made the headlines. Ever since turning pro in 1998, the native of Lemont, Illinois, has been the guy delivering water bottles to Lance Armstrong, or helping pace Carlos Sastre or Frank Schleck over mountain passes.

Then in May, at age 31, he ends up leading the surviving five cyclists in the Slipstream-Chipotle pack in the team time trial at the Giro d'Italia and wins. What's more, it's the first stage, so he earns the maglia rosa, the pink jersey. Further, he becomes the only US cyclist since Andy Hampsten in 1988 to do so.

Now, after 10 stages of the Tour de France, he's riding in the GC contender group with the big names Cadel Evans, Carlos Sastre, and Denis Menchov….

Sweltering Seattle to Portland bike ride draws to close

This Seattle-to-Portland cyclist is all smiles as she rides down the chute to the finish line festival on Sunday at Holladay Park in downtown Portland.

I don't know about the other 9,498 riders in the 2008 STP, but what my son and I will remember most about the 204-mile bicycle tour is the unrelenting heat.

Temperatures soared into the 90s on the final day, as cyclists dove for the cover of shade at all the rest stops and along final 50-mile stretch on US Route 30 into Portland. Many roadside households, especially in Washington state, turned out to cheer us on and spray us down with water as we passed. I shot pictures the past two days, which appear on the jump…
