Sastre's amazing Tour de France; survives time trial with 1:05 to spare

Forget what all the cycling experts said: Cadel Evans didn't have enough speed to catch Carlos Sastre.

2008 Tour de France favorite Evans picked up only 29 seconds on Sastre, when he needed 94 seconds. From the first time checks on Saturday, it was clear that Sastre wouldn't give up his yellow jersey.

Stefan Schumacher of Gerolsteiner won the 32.9-mile individual time trial on Saturday from Cérilly to Saint Amand Montrond. US cyclist Christian Vande Velde finished in 4th place on the stage, climbing into 5th place in the general classification.

When the Tour de France ends in Paris on Sunday, Sastre will finish in first, Evans in second (for the second straight year), Bernard Kohl in third, Denis Menchov in fourth and Vande Velde in fifth, 1:12 behind Menchov and 3:12 behind Sastre …

Chavanel wins his 1st Tour de France stage; leaders don't change

After competing for eight years at the Tour de France, France's Sylvain Chavanel won the first stage victory in his career over a fellow countryman who was making his first visit to the Tour.

The 29-year-old Cofidis cyclist beat Jérémy Roy of Française des Jeux in a two-man sprint on Stage 19 in Montluçon. The pair had successfully attacked the peloton about 48 miles into the 102-mile stage.

Team Columbia's Gerald Ciolek of Germany beat the mass sprint in the peloton, which came across the line 1:13 later. Yellow jersey wearer Carlos Sastre and all the other leaders finished together, and there was no change in the top 10 on Friday. …

Jon Stewart: “More vigilante bicyclists!”

When Robert Novak struck a pedestrian in a Washington DC crosswalk with his black Corvette convertible, it was a bicyclist who chased him down and had him stop until police arrived.

The news that the 77-year-old conservative columnist, formerly of Crossfire on CNN, was in trouble obviously delighted The Daily Show's Jon Stewart. I caught the evening rebroadcast of his Wednesday show. Stewart summed up his report:

“The only difference between this and the rest of his [Novak's] career, is that this time, someone stopped him.

“D'you know what Washington needs?  More vigilante bicyclists!” ….

Tacks on RAGBRAI route not so funny

This might be someone's idea of a joke, but it wasn't so funny to dozens of RAGBRAI cyclists who fell victim to tacks on the road.

Bicycle riders swamped a repair stop in Colo on Wednesday after running across thumb tacks that had been spread across the road. By mid-morning they had already pulled 50 tacks from tires.

The tacks were dumped along the white lines of the eastbound lanes in three different stretches of old Lincoln Highway …

Columbia's Burghardt wins Stage 17; Sastre leads Tour de France

US-based Team Columbia posted its fifth stage win at the 2008 Tour de France on Thursday as Marcus Burghardt won a breakaway sprint to the finish in Saint Etienne.

It was the first Tour win for the 25-year-old German in what looked more like a sprint in a velodrome than the end of a 122-mile road race across the French countryside.

Meanwhile, Team CSC didn't have to field any threats to the yellow jersey held by Carlos Sastre. There were no changes among the Tour leaders as they conserve energy for the individual time trial on Saturday …

Seattle to San Francisco green housing bicycle tour

Seven bicyclists are rolling out of Seattle on Friday on the Ride Green Build Green bike tour to San Francisco to raise money and awareness for affordable housing.

Each of the bicyclists is raising  $2,000 to support LEED certification for a home built by Habitat for Humanity of East King County, Washington state. The seven hosted benefit concerts, T-shirt sales, and donation solicitations before the ride and will continue fund-raising efforts during the ride. All donations are tax deductible through Habitat for Humanity.

They're heading down to Olympia on the first day to visit Habitat for Humanity Olympia and tour the facilities. As they continue to San Francisco, the riders will visit sites and organizations devoted to affordable and green housing …

Carlos Sastre wins on l'Alpe d'Huez; grabs yellow jersey at Tour de France

Veteran cyclist Carlos Sastre turned the Tour de France inside out on the slopes of l'Alpe d'Huez on Wednesday, gaining enough time on the other leaders to win the stage and possibly the Tour.

The Spaniard on Team CSC attacked at the bottom of the final climb and achieved a solo effort through the crowds to the finish, winning the stage by 2:03. We won't know until Saturday whether it is a big enough margin to offset Cadel Evans' expected strong showing at the individual time trial on the penultimate stage.

Team CSC worked at the front of the peloton all day Wednesday, seeming to protect the yellow jersey for teammate Frank Schleck. Yet the strategy may have been to keep all eyes on Schleck as Sastre secretly stole the show. …
