Tour de Fat bicycle party rolls into Seattle

It was all about bicycles (all shapes and sizes), beer (New Belgium Brewery), bands (two of them) and babes (The Sprockettes) when the Tour de Fat rolled into Seattle on Saturday.

While the Blue Angels roared overhead, hundreds of bicycle enthusiasts celebrated the gasoline-free culture of the bicycle at Gas Works Park overlooking Lake Union.

The Tour de Fat is on an 11-city swing through the West this summer to raise awareness about bicycling as sustainable form of transportation. Proceeds from the Seattle event go to Bicycle Alliance of Washington and Bike Works. The next stop is Portland on Aug. 16 …

Paris Velib program more costly than expected

The outdoor advertising group that operates the bicycle rental program in Paris says vandalism and the cost of spare parts is cutting into its margins.

The JC Decaux company's deal with Paris calls for it to provide and maintain 20,000 public bicycles in return for outdoor advertising space around France's capital.

The program is extremely successful, with 100,000-some rentals daily. However, Decaux spent about $32 million in the first half of the year to maintain the program because of vandalism and spare parts …

Thor Hushovd withdraws from Olympics

Norwegian cyclist Thor Hushovd says he's sick and won't be able to represent his country during the 2008 Olympics that starts next weekend in Beijing.

The 30-year-old cyclist on Credit Agricole won Stage 2 of the Tour de France on July 6, but struggled later on.

He's quoted in VeloNews: “It's stupid and very bitter …

Cadel Evans withdraws from Olympic time trial; knee injury

The bad luck stories for Australia's Cadel Evans continue to mount up.

Even though he finished in second place overall at the 2008 Tour de France last week, he joined the post-race partying anyway and slipped and fell on a wet floor, injuring his knee.

Evans immediately refuted rumours that he had severely injured his knee and wouldn't be able to compete in the Beijing Olympics that start next weekend. Since then, however, the knee has become swollen and he realized he wouldn't be able to compete at his peak in the individual time trial on Wednesday, Aug. 13 …

Lance Armstrong on roster of Leadville 100 this year

What did I do in the olden days when a promising relationship turned sour?  Go for a nice long bike ride.

This morning I read Lance Armstrong and Kate Hudson decided to part ways, and this afternoon I hear that Armstrong plans to compete in the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race on Aug. 9.

Maybe it's just a coincidence. Armstrong said he was going to do the mountain bike race last year, but he had to cancel when another committment arose. Floyd Landis did ride last year, and finished second place to David Wiens…

Tour de Fat comes to Seattle this weekend

This Saturday the Tour de Fat rolls into Seattle's Gas Works Park. Bicycling enthusiasts can join in a parade, participate in challenging bike contests, and enjoy entertainment from the Portland-based Sprockettes bicycle dance troupe, left.

The New Belgium Brewery's tour is visiting 11 cities throughout the West this summer where it mixes good fun with a chance to raise funds for local bike-related groups — in Seattle that's Bike Works and Bike Alliance of Washington.

Tour de Fat opens with a bike parade out the Burke Gilman Trail toward Golden Gardens that leaves at 10 a.m. Participants are invited to decorate their bikes and wear outrageous costumes …

Olympic condom advertising

The Olympics makes a lot of money off sponsorships, but I don't think there's an “Official Condom of the 2008 Olympics” yet.

According to the blog Gawker, though, Chinese condom-maker Elasun is going for the gold with some Olympic-inspired condom advertising.

It gives a whole new perspective to the race for the finish line or riding the time trial in a skinsuit. …
