Vande Velde quote: Ready to race at Olympics

“I'm like a diesel engine now. I have no fast twitch, but I am quite efficient.

“My biggest concern is to get through the first 120 miles. I know after then I will start to feel good.''

Donations help theft victims complete their bicycle tour

Generous residents in the Eugene, Oregon, are helping to put a bicycling couple from Indiana back on the road after one of their bikes and gear was stolen last weekend.

Melissa Henige and Andrew Davis had left a cafe in Eugene on Saturday when they discovered someone had cut the cable lock on their bikes and ridden off with Melissa's bike and trailer, which included clothes and camping gear.

Their initial response to throw in the towel and complete their journey to California by train was derailed when their story got out and people starting offering gear and bikes so they could continue. Andrew writes at their blog, Changing Gears:

“So offers for bikes and trailers and camping gear and help have been flooding in over the last 48 hours. It's amazing …

US Olympic cyclists apologize for protecting their lungs

The four US track cyclists who showed up at the Beijing airport wearing protective face masks have issued an apology to the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee.

They're the wrong people to apologize. The International Olympic Committee should be apologizing to all the athletes at these Summer Games for choosing a site with such notoriously bad air quality.

But it is Michael Friedman, Sarah Hammer, Bobby Lea and Jennie Reed who are apologizing. US Olympic Committee chairman Jim Scherr said the four cyclists came forward on their own volition and were not coerced. The apology ….

How Olympic cyclists are dealing with Beijing's air pollution

Weather forecasters are calling for rainy weather in Beijing later this week. That may be bad news for the Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, but it could mean cleaner air in advance of the men's road race on Saturday.

Beijing has notoriously bad air quality and many Olympic athletes are expecting the worst, in spite of China's efforts to curb pollution by closing factories in the region and banning half the vehicles from the roads.

Some members of the US cycling team, among them track cyclist Mike Friedman, arrived this week wearing black respiratory masks that covered the nose and mouth. USA Cycling officials said it was an individual choice, not a team policy.

Perhaps their choices are based on the experience of Olympic mountain biker Adam Craig, who competed in the pre-Olympic warm-up games last year. He recalled his experiences to PBS on Monday:

“It's like — it's a weird bronchial spasm thing that I was getting, that just like — whenever you tried to take enough breath to give your muscles that fuel of oxygen they need, your bronchioles just start spasming and you just like physically can't do it …

Look recalls KéO bicycle pedals

Look Cycles is recalling about 40,000 pairs of KéO Bicycle Pedals because the steel axle can break, causing the potential for fall and injury.

The San Jose-based distributor of the French-made pedals has received 14 reports of pedals breaking, including seven incidents which led to minor injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The black bicycle pedals were sold at specialty bicycle retailers across the US from January 2004 to July 2007 for $100 to $500 …

Comparing US vs. Euro bicycle use; my July ride stats

European countries that focus on bicycle lanes and bike paths are so far ahead of the US in the use of bicycles for transportation that any comparisons are actually laughable.

The US News & World Report compares trips by bicycle: 10% in Germany, 18% in Denmark, and 27% in The Netherlands. The US is 1%, a figure that is probably rounded up.

For “short trips” of less than 1-1/2 miles, 37% of those are made on a bike in The Netherlands compared to 2% in the US. …
