Zabriskie remains US pro time trial champion; live video stream for road race Sunday

David Zabriskie successfully defended his time trial title at the USA Cycling Pro Championships in Greenville, South Carolina, on Saturday.

That's an amazing feat, considering the 29-year-old from Utah suffered a broken back during Stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia this spring.

About 120 US cyclists are expected to compete Sunday for national road champion, which will be streamed live over the web at the USA Cycling Championships website

Trestle in Iron Horse State Park

The blog is looking a little gray, so I thought I'd pull out this photo from this summer's bicycle ride on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail east of Seattle.

Looking at the shadows, I must have crossed the Hull Creek trestle late in the afternoon. The rail-to-trail runs from North Bend to the Columbia …

3 efforts to make streets safer for walkers and bikers

In recent weeks I've noticed three things that are going on in the Pacific Northwest that might eventually help make the streets safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.

One is a national conference, another is an Oregon-based campaign and the third is a Seattle newspaper's Q&A.

The one with the widest scope is the Pro Walk / Pro Bike '08 conference that is meeting at the Westin in Seattle from Sept. 2-5 …

Cycling for stars and stripes on Saturday and Sunday

At last count, 113 cyclists from the US are converging on Greenville, South Carolina, on Saturday and Sunday to compete in the USA Cycling Pro championships.

I could list the roster here, but suffice to say it's every current pro cyclist in the US that I've ever heard of (and many I haven't) except Levi Leipheimer and Jason McCartney, who are on assignment in Spain and Germany for their respective teams, Astana and CSC.

That's a big sacrifice for Leipheimer, because he's the defending road race champion in the US. The defending time trial champ, David Zabriskie, will be riding in that event on Sunday.

With Leipheimer out of the picture, the most well known competitors on the road become George Hincapie and Christian Vande Velde…

Another Iowa county “bans” group bicycle rides
Update: Ordinance will be repealed

Good news: Officials drop fight to block bicyclists from roads — Des Moines Register, Aug. 28, 2008

“The supervisors will meet in Eldora on Tuesday to consider repealing the ordinance, said Hardin County Supervisor Jim Johnson. He acknowledged the ordinance has been unpopular with bicycle riders, but he said county officials were concerned about protecting county taxpayers.”

Aug. 27, 2008 — Supervisors of Iowa's Hardin County have passed an ordinance [see below] requiring that any bicycle ride of 10 or more people carry at least $1 million of liability insurance.

This is discrimination against bicyclists, plain and simple.

Any group of cyclists that takes its chances and rolls through the county without the insurance can be fined $750 …

Cavendish, Hincapie and Vande Velde among big names at 2008 Tour of Missouri

The Tour of Britain's loss will be the Tour of Missouri's gain.

The UK's Mark Cavendish, left, will be racing at the Tour of Missouri — Sept. 8-14 —  instead of at the Tour of Britain as previously expected, Team Columbia's director sportif Allan Pieper has confirmed.

He'll certainly add to the excitement raised by the expected duel for the yellow jersey between Americans George Hincapie and Christian Vande Velde …

Where to find live video-streaming of Tour of Missouri and other cycling

If you like watching live or same-day cycling coverage, there's a new website to check out.

A newly rebranded sports programming broadcaster is launching its free, online video-streaming cycling coverage on Friday with the Tour of Germany, followed by the Cycling Grand Prix, Doylestown Criterium, Tour of Missouri, and UCI Road World Championships.

Universal Sports, formerly WCSN, is making this foray into cycling to determine its popularity for online viewing. If it gains traction, I'm told, they plan to expand their cycling coverage with more and bigger races.

They've signed former US cyclist Frankie Andreu as one of their commentators …

Toronto's notorious bicycle thief

If Kryptonite ever improves on its “New York Fehgettaboudit” bicycle lock, they might want to rename it the “Igor Kenk.”

That's because Igor Kenk is the unofficial world champion bicycle thief — not an achievement that's going to win him a spot on a box of Wheaties.

The 49-year-old Toronto bike shop owner was last credited with possessing 2,865 stolen bicycles. They were at his shop, his home and 10 garages he rented around Toronto ….
