Building the Burke-Gilman bike trail missing link in Seattle

The Burke-Gilman bike trail's 1 1/2-mile missing link in Ballard could open in two years.

Funding for the trail project is included in the proposed 2009-2010 budget for the city of Seattle.

If you're wondering why it has taken so long to complete this section from 11th Avenue Northwest to the Ballard locks, consider the $14.1 million overall pricetag. The city is including $8.6 million in its upcoming budget for the work, and the remainder is to come from King County. …

Seattle joins list of Bicycle Friendly Communities

Seattle is now officially a gold level Bicycle Friendly Community.

The League of American Bicyclists made the award to Mayor Greg Nickels at the opening of the international Pro Walk / Pro Bike Conference in Seattle.

The designation comes about a year after the city council unanimously approved a resolution in favor of the hard-fought 10-year, $240 million bicycle master plan.

Although it was issued to Nickels, all the bicyclists in Seattle are responsible for the award. It notes that more than 4% of Seattle's commutes are by bicycle, which is 10 times the national average.

If I have a chance to ride my bicycle over there tomorrow, I probably wouldn't notice any change in bicycling, in spite of the new designation. It really is a recognition to the work done by people in and out of city government to make bicycling work in the city …

Levi Leipheimer leads Vuelta a Espana bicycle race

Levi Leipheimer is wearing the golden jersey at the Vuelta a Espana after winning the 26-mile individual time trial on Wednesday.

The cyclist from Santa Rosa is the only US rider in the three-week stage race around Spain. His commitment to compete for Team Astana made him one of the few to miss the US pro cycling championships in Greenville, South Carolina, last weekend.

Winning the time trial and donning the overall leader's golden jersey will surely take some of the sting out of not being able to defend his US Pro cycling title …

Melody Gardot … from bicycle accident to jazz album

One night I was up late working when I heard a wonderful female vocalist on the radio. Jazz DJ Abe Beeson at KPLU-FM told a story about the singer that involved a bicycle.

The singer is Melody Gardot and the bicycle comes in at the beginning of the story, not the end.

Melody, then 19, was riding her bicycle in Philadelphia when she was hit by an SUV. She survived the collision, but suffered some serious injuries — including head trauma — that left her bedridden for a long time …

House for sale: Located on bike path. Easy bike ride to shopping, schools and neighborhood bike repair store.

Wouldn't you like to see a house for sale ad like that?

I've always heard that the three most important points to selling a house are location, location, and location.

That used to mean location in terms of proximity to the freeway, neighborhoods, and maybe a Wal-Mart. Now there's news that a few real estate agents are taking location to mean proximity to roads with bicycle lanes and bike-centric businesses, and they're taking prospective customers on house tours by bike…

Flash from the past: Tyler Hamilton is new US pro road champion

Tyler Hamilton is the new US pro road champion after winning in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday by the width of a tire.

VeloNews calls it one of the biggest wins of his career.

It's significant because it comes in the second season after Hamilton completed a two-year doping suspension. It's also significant because Hamilton is 37 and considered retiring after last year. Does anyone expect him to retire while holding the US title?

Finishing with the silver was Blake Caldwell of Garmin-Chipotle, followed by teammate Danny Pate with bronze. …

Hit-and-run claims life of UK's celebrated cyclo-tourist Ian Hibell

The world of bicycling's living legends became a little smaller earlier this month when Britain's Ian Hibell was killed by a hit-and-run motorist while he was bike touring in Greece.

Nic and Andy tell about their friend's death at their UK-based Bike Brothers website.

Reportedly a motorist hit 74-year-old Hibell on the Athens-Solonika highway while racing another vehicle. Neither one stopped, but witnesses got the license plate numbers and police later arrested them.

How did Hibell gain worldwide attention and acclaim from cyclo-touring? Basically he took his bicycle where no one had before, then he wrote about it …
