Pennsylvania's Univest Grand Prix bike race video-streaming;
Garmin-Chipotle's Lucas Euser wins Day 1

Will Frischkorn of Garmin-Chipotle was on hand to defend his title at the Univest Grand Prix in Souderton, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, but it was teammate Lucas Euser who won the 100-mile road race.

It was clear from the video stream that the 131 pro cyclists battled rainy weather all day, but that didn't stop Euser, later joined by Frederick Ericsson (Sweden, Cykel City), from launching a breakaway and turning the final laps into a two-man race.

Although they worked well together to keep the rest of the peloton at bay, Euser attacked on the final lap and beat Ericsson by 13 seconds. Having competed in the Tour de France in July, Garmin-Chipotle completely dominated the race …

Rolling along the Pony Express route by bicycle

One hundred and 47 years after the last Pony Express rider saddled up for the 11-day ride from Sacramento to St. Joseph, two endurance cyclists are following that route.

The two, Spencer Klaassen and Dan Clinkinbeard, are bicycling the 1,800 miles on their own between the two cities that will host the opening of the 2009 Tour of California and the 2008 Tour of Missouri.

They left Sacramento (that's the Pony Express statue I shot in Old Town this winter) on Aug. 24 and were shooting for Marysville, Kansas, before stopping on Friday. The pair expect the trip will take two weeks and will put them in St. Joseph by the beginning of the 2008 Tour of Missouri. …

Sponsor problems may curb Tour de Georgia bike race

Maybe it's too soon to turn out the lights on the Tour de Georgia, but CyclingNews reports the 6-year-old bike race is “unlikely” to be around next season.

That's going to make a lot of people sad, especially the estimated 400,000 who flocked to the roadside to witness at last one of the seven stages of bicycle racing across Georgia in April.

There are more details at the CyclingNews report, but here's the gist of the story ….

Pony Express statue in Sacramento

I shot this photo of the Pony Express statue in Sacramento in January. Sacramento was the western terminus of the route across the west from St. Joseph, Missouri.

Two endurance cyclists from Missouri made an unsupported bike tour along the route to mark the start of the 2008 Tour of Missouri in St. Joseph. See …

Washington state is most “bicycle friendly”

The League of American Bicyclists has ranked all 50 states on 70 different factors and determined that the state of Washington is the most bicycle friendly.

Others in the top 5 are Wisconsin, Arizona, Oregon and Minnesota, in that order.

The least friendly — West Virginia.

In releasing the bicycle friendly state list, the League president Andy Clarke cited:

“…Washington’s model bike laws, signed and mapped statewide bike route network, dedicated funding from the state for bicycle related programs and projects, and an active statewide bicycle advisory committee …

“No trespassing” signs going up on 90-mile bike trail in Illinois

A budget shortfall in Illinois means fewer off-road routes for bicyclists to enjoy beginning this fall.

The biggest hit to cyclists is closure of  the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, left, a linear park in northwest Illinois that boasts more than 90 miles of towpath — 30 miles of it paved — as it crosses six Illinois counties.

The towpath is a popular route for bicyclists. A portion was used during the 2008 Grand Illinois Trail and Parks bike ride (GITAP) this summer.

Statewide, the Department of Natural Resources is padlocking 11 state parks to save $14 million. The parks will be closed to everyone as of Nov. 1 …

An eyewitness cycling history of Alpe d'Huez

A bicycling journalist-photographer I met online through my work at Biking Bis recently interviewed French cycling historian Jean-Paul Vespini.

Vespini has covered 19 Tours de France for the Euro cycling pubs Le Cycle and Cyclisme International. He's witnessed first-hand more Tour de France history than many of us have seen televised or have even read about.

Matt Wood's fascinating interview with Vespini is posted at the PezCycling News website. It's primarily about his new book, “The Tour is Won on the Alpe: Alpe d'Huez and the Classic Battles of the Tour de France.” …

GITAP cyclist on Hennepin Canal in Illinois

By AlanWhitaker at flickr.com

Illinois needs to close 11 parks, including the 100-mile-long Hennepin Canal Parkway state park because of a budget shortfall. The towpath is a popular route for cyclists. See “No trespassing signs to go up on 90-mile bike trail in Illinois.”

Leipheimer drops to 2nd at Vuelta a Espana bike race

Levi Leipheimer's time in the golden jersey was brief — one day — as he dropped to second place behind Sylvain Chavanel by 10 seconds after Stage 6 of the Vuelta a Espana on Thursday.

World Champion Paolo Bettini won the 93-mile stage from Ciudad Real to Toledo. The peloton gets a rest day on Friday.

Chavanel snagged the golden leader's jersey from Leipheimer by taking intermediate sprint bonus points along the race route. Leipheimer only had a 2-second advantage over the Frenchman after Wednesday's individual time trial…
