It's true — Lance Armstrong comes out of retirement

He's back.

Lance Armstrong on Tuesday confirmed reports that he would return to professional cycling in 2009 and make a run for an 8th Tour de France championship.

While not naming a team, he said it would be managed by Johan Bruyneel, his former director sportif at Postal and Discovery and currently at Team Astana.

According to a statement read by Armstrong on his Livestrong.com website:

“I am happy to announce that after talking with my children, my family and my closest friends, I have decided to return to professional cycling in order to raise awareness of the global cancer burden. …

“The reason for this is to launch an international cancer strategy.”

It's also to open a can of whoop-ass on the peloton …

Bicycle fatalities and injuries drop in 2007; part of virtuous cycle?

The number of bicyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2007 dropped 9.6% from the previous year, the biggest year-to-year drop this decade.

The National Highway Transporation Safety Administration reports 698 “pedalcyclists” were killed in traffic crashes in 2007, compared to 772 in 2006. It was the second year in a row that bicycle fatalities had gone down.

The bureau released the report in August, shortly before this weekend's report by researchers at the University of New South Wales that concludes that the rate of collisions between bikes and cars drops as more people ride their bicycles.

Motorists drive more safely when they see more cyclists and pedestrians around, researchers say ….

Tour of Missouri Stage 1 goes to Mark Cavendish

The Brit who's been winning sprints on his bicycle all across Europe this spring and summer is doing so in North America now.

Mark Cavendish, the 23-year-old cycling phenom for US-based Team Columbia, won Stage 1 of the Tour of Missouri in windy and wet Kansas City on Monday.

His dash for the finish in the 90-mile race from St. Joseph to Kansas City marked his 16th win of the season, including four at the Tour de France. Team Garmin Chipotle's Tyler Farrar of Wenatchee, Washington, finished a close second ……

Lance Armstrong coming out of retirement in 2009?

I checked the date and it's not April 1st, so I'll pass along this report in VeloNews that Lance Armstrong will return to bicycle racing with Team Astana in 2009.

The anonymous sources told Neal Rogers of VeloNews that Armstrong will race at the Amgen Tour of California, Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphine-Libere and the Tour de France.

One of the few shreds of hard evidence in the report is the fact that Armstrong — who turns 37 on Sept. 18 — re-enrolled in the US Anti-Doping Agency's out-of-competition testing pool. Rules state that any athlete coming out of retirement must enroll in the USADA out of competition testing program at least six months before becoming eligible …

Golden jersey slips from Leipheimer's grasp again at Vuelta

Spanish cyclist Egoi Martinez joined a breakaway and gained just enough time to take the overall leader's golden jersey from Levi Leipheimer, who lost it for the second time on Stage 9 of the Vuelta a Espana on Monday.

Reports suggest that Leipheimer's Astana team miscalculated and allowed the 11-man escape group to get too much of a lead before starting the chase ….

Watching the 2008 Tour of Missouri at home or the office

The 2008 Tour of Missouri rolls out for 7 stages beginning Monday, and there are plenty of opportunities to watch if you can't station yourself at the roadside somewhere between St. Joseph and St. Louis.

There is free, live online video streaming, evening summaries on midwestern sports cable networks, “play-by-play” coverage at the cycling websites, and a new social media site where fans can chat and post their images from the race.

For starters, Universal Sports is providing free, live streaming video coverage of each stage with commentary. Replays are available after the race. Universal relaunched this month and has been streaming Tour of Germany, and the Univest Grand Prix, among other sports events. Check out the Universal cycling schedule for details (times are ET).

Vuelta a Espana in mountains; Leipheimer back in gold

Levi Leipheimer donned the golden jersey for the second time during the 2008 Vuelta a Espana on Sunday as the peloton finished its second day in the Pyrénées.

His Astana teammate and race favorite Alberto Contador sits just 21 seconds behind Leipheimer, the sole American in the three week race that's entering its second week. David Moncoutie of Cofidis won Stage 8 that boasted four major climbs, including the mountaintop finish at Pla de Beret.

Leipheimer first gained the overall leader's jersey on Wednesday …
