Cycling vest displays bicycle speed

Here's a vest that displays your speed on your back, letting everyone know how fast you're traveling on your bicycle.

There's more to it than merely showing off, though.

Inventors Brady Clark and Mykle Hansen say there are three goals behind the Speed-Vest: To increase awareness that bicycling is efficient; educate motorists about overtaking bicyclists safely; and demonstrate that a person can easily bike 10-15 mph.

The garment is not yet available commercially, but there's been a lot of interest and they've been talking to potential partners. …

Will the Tour of Missouri return for 2009?

The second Tour of Missouri bike race that ended in St. Louis on Sunday drew more spectators than last year. Is that enough to guarantee its return?

Absolutely not. In a sport that doesn't rely on tickets sales, bicycle race organizers always have to worry about landing a major sponsor. In spite of the Tour of Georgia's popularity, for instance, the race is a question mark until a sponsor is found.

Missouri has been lucky because its major cheerleader is also the lieutenant governor, Peter Kinder. But that luck may be running out as Kinder is up for reelection this year and his opponent is against state support of the bicycle race …

Armstrong team wins race; doubts raised about previous study

Just as Lance Armstrong and his two teammates were winning the 12 Hours of Snowmass mountain bike race in Colorado, a human performance expert admitted he made mistakes in calculating the bicycle racer's muscle efficiency.

It may serve to reignite the whole “did-he or didn't-he” dope controversy, even though the researcher says the mistake doesn't changed the study's results.

Armstrong announced last week that he'll attempt his 8th Tour de France championship in 2009 in a campaign that will include a comprehensive anti-doping program that he says will leave no doubt that he's been cycling clean …

Complimentary bicycles offered at vacation spots

Ad: “Beach bike your way through Emerald Isle, complimentary of Emerald Isle Realty. New weekly reservations arriving during September and October will receive 2 complimentary deluxe beach bicycles.”

I don't know if this is a new idea, but it's certainly a timely one considering the impact of higher gasoline prices on traveling.

When a regular reader sent me the advertisement, he said it might show a new trend of vacation entrepreneurs using bicycles to lure visitors to their  resorts. It might even prove that people in the tourism industry are discovering the bicycle is a useful tool for the traveling public.

It reminded me of the real estate agents in Portland and Boulder I wrote about recently who show houses to prospective buyers by bicycle …

Christian Vande Velde wins 2008 Tour of Missouri

The US professional cycling season started for Christian Vande Velde with a visit to the podium after he finished third overall in the Tour of California in February.

The year is drawing to a close with Vande Velde on the top step of  the podium as he wins the 2008 Tour of  Missouri by protecting his lead during the 7th Stage in St. Louis on Sunday.

Joining the 32-year-old Garmin Chipotle cyclist on the podium were Michael Rogers of Team Columbia and Svein Tuft of Symmetrics. The two finished behind Vande Velde by the same margin — 18 seconds for Rogers and 48 seconds for Tuft — they held since Vande Velde won the Stage 3 time trial on Wednesday to take over the race lead.

Last year's winner George Hincapie of Team Columbia finished in 4th, trailing by 1:03. ….

Mark Cavenish takes 3rd Tour of Missouri win; Vande Velde still in yellow

Ivan Dominguez, the Cuban Missile of Toyota-United, is the latest sprinter to fall victim to Mark Cavenish at the 2008 Tour of Missouri.

Cavendish owns three stage wins at the Tour of Missouri so far; his first stage wins on US soil. His victory on Saturday marks 18 for Team Columbia's Cavenish, including four at the Tour de France.

Team Columbia has worked all year at getting the 23-year-old British sprinter to the front of the pack where he can launch himself over the line. The finish for the 96-mile bike race from Hermann to St. Charles was no exception …

Red Cross Tour du Rouge charity bike ride in wake of Hurricane Ike

With much of the Texas and Louisiana coasts still reeling from the devastation left behind by Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike, it's a good time to call attention to next month's Tour du Rougebicycle ride.

The inaugural six-day bike tour from Houston to New Orleans is a fund-raiser for American Red Cross chapters in the region that provide relief to people displaced by natural disasters.

If you need to know why people combine recreational bicycle riding with fund-raising, check out the current issue of Adventure Cyclist magazine which dedicated its current issue to charity bicycle rides. The Adventure Cycling Association's publication tells stories about people who make the rides and lists 8 fund-raising bike rides, which I've added to Charity Bike Rides calendar …
