Deadline looms to nominate Bicycle Travel Awards

Is there someone you met on a bicycle tour this year who you think deserves recognition for the help they offer bicyclists?

Then you need to drop everything and fill out the Bicycle Travel Awards nominations at Adventure Cycling. The deadline is Sept. 30.

At left is my picture of June Curry taken 24 years ago. She's the famous “Cookie Lady” of Afton, Virginia, and was certainly deserving of having the Trail Angel award named for her in 2003.

Since then, the Adventure Cycling organization has added three other awards. Here's a list of all the Bicycle Travel Awards. You can make nominations for any except the “volunteer award:” ….

World cycling championships this week; live video-streaming

Italian cyclist Paolo Bettini is going for a never-achieved three-in-a-row world cycling titles when the 75th edition of the World Championships convenes Wednesday through Sunday in Varese, Italy.

Bettini has been the man wearing the rainbow jersey in the peloton the past two years after victories in Salzburg and Stuttgart.

Now he's trying to join the club of three-time winners — Alfredo Binda, Eddy Merckx, Rik Van Steenbergen and Oscar Freire — but do it in back-to-back-to-back years. Levi Leipheimer will be among those on hand to prevent him from succeeding.

Free online video-streaming of the men's and women's road races and men's and women's time trials at Varese, Italy, will be provided by Universal Sports. See the schedule online for World Championship updates. …

Bixi bicycle rental system hits les rues in Montreal

Montreal became the latest city to launch a self-service bicycle rental service on Sunday when 40 Bixi prototypes hit the streets.

The name Bixi is derived from bicycle and taxi. When the program undergoes its full-launch in Spring 2009, Montreal will have 2,400 rental bicycles available at 300 stations around the city.

Because of that city's harsh weather, the Bixis only will be available from mid-April through mid-November.

The program is similar to the well-known Velib program in Paris ….

Contador becomes 1 of 5 cyclists to win all 3 Grand Tours;
Leipheimer 2nd at Vuelta a Espana

Alberto Contador joined an elite club on Sunday when he became one of only five cyclists to win all three Grand Tours.

The 25-year-old Spanish bicyclist's championship at the Vuelta a Espana in Madrid put him in the record books after previous wins at the Giro d'Italia in May and the Tour de France in 2007.

No one has ever won all three Grand Tours in the same year, that's an indication of the difficulty of achieving such a mark. The other four cyclists with a championship from each race: …

One million Kona bicycles

The Kona Bicycle Co. recently rolled its one-millionth bicycle off the assembly line after about 20 years in Ferndale, Washington.

The Cinder Cone was the first bicycle that Kona made, back in 1988. The durable hardtail has evolved, but the name lives on. Kona has made about 77,155 Cinder Cones, making it the company's most popular bike …
