East Lake Sammamish Trail paving: northern section complete

Since the East Lake Sammamish Trail opened in 2006 with a crushed stone surface, many bicycle riders have said they'd like to see it paved.

Their wishes have been granted, at least on a 1.2-mile section at the north end of the 11-mile rail-trail.

King County Parks says a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday in the new trail side parking lot on NE 70th Street will mark the re-opening of the Redmond section of the East Lake Sammamish Trail.

Paving the southern end of the East Lake Sammamish Trail in Issaquah is the next project on tap …

An unusually fine November day for a bike ride

As fall becomes winter in the Pacific Northwest, I keep expecting the permanent overcast skies to roll in and bring the drizzle that keeps me in rain gear all winter long.

We've had our share of nasty days already, but Saturday was not one of them. Clear skies and temperatures in the low 50s coaxed me outside on my bicycle. …

Host cities named for 2012 Amgen Tour of California

Organizers for the Amgen Tour of California announced the 13 cities that will play host to the eight stages of next year's bike race that rolls across 750 miles of scenic landscape from May 13-20, 2012.

Starting in Santa Rosa, the route generally heads southward to the San Francisco Bay area, then east into the Mother Lode. There's an individual time trial in Bakersfield, then two stages in the southern mountains before the final criterium in Los Angeles.

The route meisters are avoiding the high mountains of Northern California, considering the snowy conditions that canceled the first stage last year …

California and Colorado bicycle tour dates announced

Is your 2012 bike tour going to be a Rocky Mountain High? Or are you California Dreamin'?

In either case, you have a dozen multi-day bike tours scheduled this summer in Colorado and California from which to choose.

Some are mass bike rides with hundreds of cyclists, such as Ride the Rockies presented by the Denver Post. Others are more intimate affairs with fewer than 20 riders offered by Adventure Cycling Association.

I'm updating the list of Across-State Bicycle Rides for 2012, so there are dates and host cities …

GOP loses latest attempt to gut bicycle project funding

Update: Nov. 1, 2011 — Advocates are undoubtedly rejoicing after the Senate on Tuesday rejected 60-38 the latest attempt by Republicans to kill federal funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects.

Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky offered the amendment that would have redirected the transportation enhancement funds to pay for bridge repairs. It was the third threat against that funding in the past two months.

Although the GOP is batting 0-3 on the measure, the issue is expected to come up again…

Tale of the tape: achieving my 4,000-mile goal for 2011

On my birthday bicycle ride to bike the miles of my age in January, I set my annual goal to complete 4,000 miles by the end of the year.

Instead of slogging through ankle-deep snow to complete the required miles, like 2009, I've completed my personal challenge by the end of October: 4,009 miles.

A lot of my success is due to the training and riding the 500-mile Biking Across Kansas in June with my son. Not only did that directly add miles to the total, but it boosted my endurance so I was comfortable going longer distances …
