Quote: Anyone can ride a century

“I learned from the ride that after doing a certain number of miles, your legs can't walk anymore. I learned that it takes a lot of strength and patience to ride 100 miles, but that anyone – no matter what shape, size or age – can ride 100 miles if they put their mind to it.”

— Teddy Collinson, 10, of Edgewater, Maryland, summing up his first Sea Gull Century on Oct. 4. The annual bike ride on the Eastern Shore of Maryland is forgiving in terms of its flat terrain, but can be brutal in terms of headwinds. …

Back to the future in the pro cycling peloton

Fire up the flux capacitor, Doc. It's going to feel like we're traveling through time for the 2009 pro cycling season.

Here's a rundown of some flashes from the past — Lance Armstrong, Ivan Basso, Alexandre Vinokourov, and Floyd Landis — who say they'll be racing next year.

First we learned that Lance Armstrong, 37, was coming out of retirement to seek another victory at the Tour de France. Now he says the Giro d'Italia will be his main target, perhaps to give ease to teammate Alberto Contador who would like to win another Tour of his own …

Finish the Ride completes bicycle tour that ended tragically

Two sons and a daughter are riding the final leg of a bicycle tour their father didn't finish a year ago when he was one of two people struck and killed near the end of the ride.

The event this Sunday, called “Finish the Ride,” memorializes the final day of Lee Anne Barry's cross-country bicycle tour for brain injury awareness, the Brain Injury Greatest Journey (B.I.G. Ride). Barry and a riding companion for the day, Tom Hoskins, were struck and killed by a motorist just miles from her home in Waxhaw, North Carolina, where the tour was to end.

Rob, Ryan and Becca Hoskins are participating in Finish the Ride to support their father's desire to raise awareness about head injuries. The ride rolls out from Columbia, South Carolina, and ends in Waxhaw, North Carolina …

Re-energizing America from a bicycle saddle

A grassroots effort is underway to organize a mass cross-country bicycle tour next summer to promote a clean energy economy for the United States.

The bike tours — collectively dubbed The Trek to Re-Energize America — will leave from different points around the US and converge on Washington DC in late July or early August.

The cyclists will promote their cause as they head down the road. Once they reach the Capitol, they'll contact their congressmen and lobby for action on legislation that fights climate change. According to the website:

“A massive number of organized passionate people who have biked across the United States for something they believe strongly in will make for a statement that politicians and media will be unable to ignore.” …

Youth gets 2 years in Colorado hit-and-run that killed bicyclist

A judge sentenced a Colorado boy to two years — the maximum under juvenile law — at a Colorado juvenile prison in the hit-and-run death of a touring bicyclist last summer.

Illinois bicyclist Dave Tomlinson was taking part in a group bicycle ride through Colorado last July when he was struck from behind by an SUV on Route 550 near Colona, between Montrose and Ouray. He was thrown more than 100 feet by the impact.

None of the other members of the 20-member chartered bike tour saw the collision, but witnesses immediately reported the crash. The 14-year-old youth was apprehended at a Montrose parking lot …
