South Korean bike policies pump stocks

Two South Korean bicycle makers saw their stocks rise on Wednesday despite an overall loss by the market that day.

Samculy Bicycle jumped 10.58 percent and Very Good Leisure rose 5.2 percent, according to TradingMarkets.com. This in spite of a 8.24 percent loss by the Kosdaq market.

The increase is believed to be driven by the Seoul city government announcing plans to build 129 miles of bike paths throughout South Korean over the next four years…

Tyler Farrar's father injured in bike-car crash in Wenatchee

A Wenatchee, Washington, doctor and father of pro cyclist Tyler Farrar is suffering from a severe spinal injury after being struck head-on by a car Wednesday morning.

Ed Farrar, 57, is an orthopedic surgeon in central Washington; his son Tyler is a member of the Garmin-Chipotle pro cycling team and grew up in the Wenatchee area.

Farrar was riding Wednesday morning when a 56-year-old security guard driving a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria took his eyes off the road, drifted into his lane and struck him…

2009 L'Etape du Tour lets amateurs suffer on Mont Ventoux

Cyclists who really want to test their abilities against the pros can tackle the L'Etape du Tour, which will route them over 4 climbs on their way to a finish atop Mount Ventoux.

L'Etape du Tour, celebrating its 17th year, is a “recreational” bicycle ride that usually follows the most difficult stage of that year's Tour de France.

In 2009 that's the stage that ends on Mount Ventoux. The L'Etape cyclists will make the 107-mile bike ride on July 20, about five days before it becomes the penultimate stage of the Tour de France …

2009 Tour de France a climber's dream

The 2009 Tour de France sounds a lot like one of those old-fashioned Cook's tours of Europe — 6 countries in 21 days.

Of course, the racing bicyclists will spend most of their time in France, where the peloton will battle on the legendary Mont Ventoux on the next to last day.

The bike race runs from July 4 – 26, and starts in the Principality of Monaco, before it takes detours into Spain, Andorra, Switzerland, and Italy along its 2,170-mile course through France …

Bicycle club endorses ballot initiatives, candidates in Puget Sound

Only if you live in Washington state, do you have to worry about how to vote on a ballot initiative to change the hours for HOV lanes, whether to support a tax levy for parks and a long-term plan for mass transit in the Puget Sound.

Before you mark your ballot, you might want to check the endorsements from the Cascade Bicycle Club on these issues if you're not sure how to vote. The club also endorses some legislative races in the Puget Sound.

A “No” vote on Initiative 985 is being recommended by Cascade …

Making the case for bicycling and walking

Citing a “build it and they will come” strategy, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy issued a report promoting more federal funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects.

The report — “Active Transportation for America: The Case for Increased Federal Investment in Bicycling and Walking” — makes the case that spending more on bicycling and pedestrian facilities would provide benefits to Americans far beyond the amount that was invested.

The Conservancy is seeking $2 billion in alternative transportation funding for 40 communities.

Encouraging people out of their cars would reduce the need to spend billions on highway improvements to deal with traffic congestion. It will also cut oil dependency as well as curtail greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the nationwide obesity problem …

Mississippi River Trail revealed in bicycling guidebook

Nearly 200 years ago, many towns began springing up along the Mississippi River shoreline to play host to the flatboats and steamboats that brought commerce up and down the great waterway.

Today, Bob Robinson says those towns can cater to touring bicyclists who pass through on the backroads and bicycle paths that make up the 3,000-mile Mississippi River Trail.

Robinson is a bicyclist from Fort Smith, Arkansas, who has just written and published the definitive guidebook — Bicycling Guide to the Mississippi River Trail — for bike travelers wanting to explore this historic route.

Chosen as one of the 16 National Millennium Trails in 2000 for reflecting a defining aspect of America's culture, the Mississippi River Trail (MRT) is in the same league with the Underground Railroad Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail …
