Big 3 charity bike rides raise $53 million to fight cancer in 2011

The bicycle continued to be an important fund-raising tool in the fight against cancer in 2011.

Although figures aren't available from the scores of cancer-battling bicycle rides in 2011, three big ones alone raised more than $53 million.

The three — Pan Mass Challenge, Pelotonia, and the Livestrong Challenge series — brought together 19,000 bicycle riders in the fight against cancer. Congratulations to them all.

Amateur cyclists can ride tough Tour of California stage

Borrowing a theme from its French cousin, le Tour de France, the 2012 Amgen Tour of California is taking the toughest stage of next year's bike race and turning it into a ride for every day cyclists.

Called L'Etape du California, the bike ride for amateur cyclists will be Stage 7's assault on Mt. Baldy from Ontario in southern part of the state.

The amateur ride is scheduled on Saturday, April 28. The contested Stage 7 for the pros in the Tour of California is the penultimate stage and rolls out May 19.

Registration is due to open in December ….

Bike MS and Raleigh form partnership

Bike MS is hooking up with bike-maker Raleigh in a partnership to provide services for participants of its charity bike rides in 2012.

More than 100,000 folks ride their bicycles in some 100 Bike MS events annually to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Seattle voters reject car-tab fee that included bike projects

A proposal to raise $204 million for transportation projects over the next 10 years in Seattle, including bicycle infrastructure, failed on Tuesday.

Voters in the city resoundingly defeated the measure that would have required car owners to pay an extra $60 car tab fee per automobile.
