A plan to link rails-to-trails in the mid-Atlantic states to form a Grand History Trail. Dark green are existing off-road routes, light green are planned routes, pink are temporary on or off-road routes and red are on-street gaps where no off-road is planned. See the interactive Google map.

Lance Armstrong has put his 447-acre ranch in Dripping Springs on the market, complete with the 4-bedroom, 4 bath home and shared access to Deadman's Hole natural swimming pond.
This isn't the Armstrong estate in Austin that made news over the summer for being the top residential water consumer in the city by a factor of four (since greatly reduced).
This is the ranch about 25 miles from Austin where Armstrong got into trouble with his neighbors for dirtying up the shared swimming hole. Apparently some dams he built on his property diverted some sediment into the pond, which he cleaned up to the tune of $850,000 …

The upcoming issue of Outside magazine tickles our wanderlust with the “The 100 Best Adventure Websites” list.
While we could probably rely on most of these 100 websites at one time or another, I culled through the list to find ones that were the most pertinent for bicyclists.
The editors listed only three websites specifically for bicycling. There are others for shopping, mapping, fitness and event scheduling that bicyclists can use …

The return to pro cycling by Lance Armstrong after three years of retirement puts the 2009 Tour Down Under on the map, but he isn't the only high profile cyclist at the bike race.
Five former Tour Down Under champions will be racing. They are Andre Greipel (2008, Germany) on Team Columbia, Martin Elmiger (2007, Switzerland) on AG2R, Luis Leon Sanchez (2005, Spain) on Caisse Epargne, Michael Rogers (2002, Australia) Team Columbia, and Stuart O'Grady (1999 and 2001, Team Saxo Bank).
The 2006 Tour de France winner, Oscar Pereiro, also will compete for Caisse Epargne …

If you were waiting to decide whether you wanted to sign up for the Ride Around Washington bike tour in August, you're too late. RAW sold out in five days this year.
Even though the week-long bicycle tour sponsored by the Cascade Bicycle Club is limited to 215 riders, I don't remember registration ever shutting down so early.
In terms of popularity, it ranks right up there with the Tour de Wyoming, which has filled up within 15 minutes of online registration opening.
Cascade Bicycle Club announced that RAW had sold out about 12:30 p.m. Monday via Twitter.
Cascade this year is limiting registration …

A college professor is embarking on a 7,000-mile bicycle tour through Africa and will teach a class on local foods and agricultural practices along the way.
The University of Minnesota course offered by Paul Porter is entitled “Food and Agriculture from Cairo to Capetown at 10 miles per hour.”
Porter, a prof in the department of agronomy and plant genetics at the St. Paul campus, will use a satellite telephone to give live lectures and leave podcasts at a website. He'll also update his blog, Paul Porter's Tour d'Afrique, with descriptions of his locale, the weather, and what he and the local inhabitants are eating …

If you're looking for the surging interest in cycling that Lance Armstrong's return to the peloton is sure to bring, consider these two facts:
— Nearly double the number of recreational riders have signed up to ride Stage 4 of this year's Tour Down Under ahead of the pro peloton.
— And South Australia has pumped another $1.5 million into the ride to handle the influx of visitors and media.
With five days remaining to register for the citizen's challenge ride, Tour Down Under reports that 6,312 are ready to ride this year, compared to 3,400 bicyclists last year …
