Jonesing to save the planet on Earth Day with bicycle power

Volunteers and staff are cranking the pedals on these bicycles to power up the Jones Soda headquarters building in Seattle on Earth Day.

The building is off the electric grid on Wednesday with only bare essentials running, such as some phones, lights and computers.

With the help of the Applied Science students at the UW, Recycled Cycles bike store and plans from Pedal Power Generator, Jones set up 10 bikes fitted with generators to run the offices.

You can learn how to win a free Jones Soda or a T-shirt …

Amazing bicycle stunts video from Scotland

I wonder if Danny MacAskill as a youngster used to ride his bike in front of his house and shout to startled observers, “Hey look, no hands.”

Imagine the reaction now when people walking down the street in Edinburgh, Scotland, see him do a backflip off a tree on his bike or bounce off the wall of a building like Spiderman.

Now the world is viewing his amazing feats on this video posted on YouTube.com on Sunday. By Wednesday morning, the clip had been viewed 780,000 times. It's less than 6 minutes long, and just gets crazier as it goes on.

MacAskill rides for the trials team for Inspired Bicycles …

Plowing and bicycling the North Cascades Highway

Unseasonably warm temperatures in the 60s and 70s are hitting the Seattle area, but the high country along the North Cascades Highway still has plenty of snow.

Washington state highway snow-clearing crews working from the east have hit bare pavement on the way to the 5,477-foot Washington Pass on Highway 20.

They're trying to clear by May 1 arguably one of the nation's most spectacular stretches of highway. It's a big draw not only for motorists but for touring bicyclists.

The 50-some miles of Highway 20 between Mazama and Newhalem in the North Cascades National Park is featured in Adventure Cycling Association's Northern Tier and Washington Parks bicycle routes.

It's also a destination for many bicyclists riding alone or in groups who want to test their climbing abilities in rarified air ….

Unintentional crash or assault and battery at Tour of Turkey?

You may never have heard of Dutch cyclist Theo Bos before (I hadn't), but I'll bet you won't forget his name now.

The cyclist for Rabobank was involved in a crash on Sunday in the final meters of the Tour of Turkey that looks to all the world like he grabbed yellow-jersey wearer Daryl Impey of Barloworld and flung him to the ground.

Both Bos and Impey hit the deck. Impey eventually limped across the line to win the 8 stage Presidential Cycling Tour (Tour of Turkey), but he skipped the podium celebrations and is being monitored for a light fracture in a vertabra; he also lost a tooth.

Calls immediately came in for Bos to be suspended. Among those offered criticism were Lance Armstrong at his Twitter site:

“rewatched Bos crash 10x. Fences were uneven, sprint looked nervous/sketchy, but imo the hands should never come off the bars in a sprint..

Online company enables cyclists to rent a bicycle — now

Something I wanted to do when I visited Sacramento last winter was to explore the bicycle trail along the American River.

To rent a bicycle before I left, I had to search for bike shops, check if they were close to the trail, then call to compare prices and determine if they actually would have bicycles in stock.

Now a couple of midwestern cycling enthusiasts are making it easier for bicyclists who want to get a ride in on their business or pleasure trips. They've created an online service — RentABikeNow.com — that enables cyclists to rent bicycles in 144 cities in the U.S.

The one-stop online-shop connects cyclists with companies and shops that have bicycles for rent. The cyclist simply choses a destination and date, then compares types, sizes and costs of bikes that are offered by one or more shops. The reservation is made online …
