Hood Canal bicycling alternatives

Bicyclists who want to use the Hood Canal ferry while the bridge is under construction can ride directly to the water shuttle docks in South Point or Lofall. Previously, bicyclists had to use the passenger shuttles to get to the docks. More info at PTLeader.com.

Bicyclists must catch a shuttle from Shine Pit Park and …

Tour of the Gila turns into a monster race with Armstrong in peloton

A little ol' 5-day stage race based in Silver City, New Mexico, has suddenly taken on international significance with the arrival of Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer and Chris Horner as competitors.

The trio literally found out on Tuesday afternoon that they were cleared to ride the 23rd edition of the Tour of the Gila bike race that runs Wednesday through Sunday in southern New Mexico.

Also in the peloton will be Floyd Landis and Rory Sutherland, riding for the OUCH team. Because Armstrong, Leipheimer and Horner compete for the ProTour level Astana team, they cannot compete as Astana members in the national-level race. The three will be wearing jerseys from Armstrong's Mellow Johnny's bike shop in Austin.

The details of UCI giving them permission to race weren't worked out until Tuesday afternoon …

Bicycle fatalities dropped in 2007; 10 states with the most and least

It's an encouraging sign that bicycle fatalities across the U.S. dropped for a second straight year in 2007 to 698 deaths, representing a 9.5% decrease from the previous year.

Of course, one fatality is too many.

Could it be that bicyclists and motorists are becoming more aware of each other and willing to share the road? We can only hope.

The annual report on bicycle fatalities from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration runs a few months behind, so we'll have to wait to learn if bicycle fatalities continued to drop in 2008 …

Do-it-yourself Arkansas across-state bicycle tour

What do you do if you want to take a week-long across-state-bicycle tour of your home state but nothing is offered?

You create your own tour. A handful of members of the Arkansas Bicycle Club earlier this month routed their own 350-mile bicycle tour, without sag support, evening meetings, insurance forms or continuous “on-your-left” warnings.

The self-supported bicycle tour left North Little Rock with four bicyclists on April 13, and after picking up and dropping off riders throughout the rainy week, returned to Little Rock with two cyclists on April 19. Six bicyclists rode all or part of the route.

You may not think this is a big deal, but the 10,000-strong RAGBRAI got its start with relatively humble beginnings. ..

Armstrong survives “showergate”; reveals ID of Juan Pelota

The French anti-doping agency says it won't open a case against Lance Armstrong for leaving a doping control officer outside his house in France while he took a shower back in March.

The agency's decision means Armstrong is free to race for an unprecedented eighth win at the 2009 Tour de France, which begins July 4.

Armstrong is currently recovering from a collarbone break he suffered in a bicycle race in Spain back on March 23rd. He's training for the 2009 Giro d'Italia, a three-week bike race around Italy in which he has never participated…

Sisters take over Colorado bicycle tour company

The Price family

Hand-me-down bicycles are fairly common among family members.

But Monica Price, 30, and Maria Elena Price, 27, are running an international bicycle tour company passed down from their parents.

The company is Fort Collins, Colorado-based ExperiencePlus!, which has been offering bicycle tours primarily in the Americas, Europe and Australia for some 30 years.

The outfit was founded by Rick Price and Paola Malpezzi Price back in the '70s. As their daughters grew up, they participated in the tours and helped run the business. …

National Bike Month is coming up in May, and you might be trying to convince some coworkers to join your bike commuting efforts for Bike-to-Work Week May 11-15.

The League of American Bicyclists refutes 10 common arguments for not commuting to work by bicycle in its manual for bike-to-work organizers. I've reprinted them below.

Also, “On Men” blogger Adam Voiland at US News & World Report reports the six most common excuses he hears for not commuting by bicycle, from “it's too dangerous” to “it will make me impotent.” A longtime bike commuter, he shoots them down one at a time.

Here's the League's list of Bike Month and Bike-to-Work week events — ….
