Surprise sprint finish at Tour de France favors Cavendish

Mark Cavendish notched his fifth victory this year at the Tour de France as a group of sprinters hung onto the peloton's leaders over the final climb of Stage 19.

The win makes 24-year-old the winningest Brit in Tour de France history with nine stage victories.

Although the top 8 overall remained in order behind yellow jersey Alberto Contador, Lance Armstrong gained 4 seconds in his overall third position by staying with the lead group as a split developed further back to the others in the peloton.

While the 110-mile stage from Bourgoin-Jallieu to Aubenas was considered to be an intermediate stage that might see a breakaway group finish first, that breakaway was reeled in early. …

New threat to bicycle riders: blowgun darts

As if the streets are dangerous enough, some nitbrain in Seattle apparently has decided it's great sport to shoot blowgun darts at bicyclists.

Two people riding their bicycles in the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard reported to police that they were hit by 4-inch darts fired from a blowgun on Monday.

Police are investigating the separate attacks against a 29-year-old man and a 39-year-woman as aggravated assaults.

One victim, Avram Dolen, told the Seattle Times …..

Armstrong gains ground at Tour de France time trial

There is no drafting, team tactics or breaking away at the Tour de France individual time trial. The bicycle racers win or lose on their own.

Here are the big winners from the 25-mile Stage 18 time trial at Annecy:

Alberto Contador — The Astana cyclist solidified his position in the yellow jersey by winning the stage and earning more respect for his efforts. His 48:30 was 3 seconds faster than Fabian Cancellara, whose time was the one to shoot for most of the day.

Lance Armstrong — Finished 16th on the stage but moved up to 3rd overall in the General Classification. He finished 1:30 behind Contador, but ahead of a whole host of other rivals for a podium position in Paris. …

Schleck brothers ambush peloton again at Tour de France

Andy and Frank Schleck catapulted themselves into second and third places behind Alberto Contador on Stage 17 of the Tour de France on Wednesday as Lance Armstrong dropped from second to fourth place.

On the eve of announcing a new team that he'll lead, Armstrong was put in the unusual position of working to protect an Astana teammate's position at the Tour as his own standing slipped.

But the most unusual sight along much of the 106-mile stage from Bourg Saint Maurice to Le Grand Bornand had to be Thor Hushovd, the sprinter, who took a solo breakaway over two mountain climbs to ensure he'd get the intermediate sprint points in his bid for the green jersey …

One bicycle challenge ends; another begins

Remember Al Emma? He's the 69-year-old bicyclist from Pennsylvania I wrote about last spring who had one more organized century to ride until he'd completed one in every state.

Well, Emma just emailed me to say simply that he'd completed the One Helena Hundred this past weekend in Montana.

That gives him at least one organized century in all 50 states. While that's an amazing feat, consider that he's done them all since 2002.

Meanwhile, in a similar vein, Phil Nagle of Tipp City, Ohio, just set off Monday to ride his bicycle to every state in the lower 48 in 48 days. He's doing it to raise money for cancer research ….

Brothers can't unhinge yellow jersey in Alps at Tour de France

The Schleck brothers tried a one-two punch to knock Alberto Contador out of the yellow jersey on Tuesday as Stage 16 of the Tour de France continued through the Alps.

The effort didn't phase the Spanish cyclist on Team Astana, but it briefly put Lance Armstrong on the mat. He valiantly battled back, however, and regained the yellow jersey group to hold onto second place in the overall standings.

Spain's Mikel Astarloza, above, survived in an ever-dwindling breakaway over the two cols — Grand Saint Bernard and Petit Saint Bernard — to win his first-ever Tour de France stage and propel himself into 11th place overall ….

County in Colorado wants power to say “No” to bicycling

After denying a permit to a charity bicycle ride, commissioners in a Denver metro area county say they'll ask the state legislature to grant counties the power to ban bicycles from county roads of their choice.

The Bicycle Colorado advocacy group says this must not be allowed to happen.

“If such legislation were to pass, county roads anywhere in the state could be closed to bicyclists, including critical cycling routes like Deer Creek Canyon in Jefferson County, Swan Mountain Road in Summit County, Horsetooth Reservoir in Larimer County, and many, many more.”

I'm not familiar with these roads, but it sounds like a big mistake to give counties the right to ban bicycles from certain roads. Bicyclists have paid the taxes, along with other citizens, to build and maintain those county roads, and they have a perfect right to use those roads ….

Enabling women to stand-up to the call of nature

It's not uncommon to find wide varieties of sports supplements and high-tech training gadgets hawked at major bicycling events.

But a journalist for the Des Moines Register stumbled across a truly unique device for sale at an expo booth in Council Bluffs for the kickoff of RAGBRAI over the weekend.

Called FUDS — short for female urination devices, the product allows women to answer the call of nature just as men do, by standing up.

The funnel-shaped, silicon devices are sold by GoGirl, whose slogan is “Don't take life sitting down.” …..
