A favorite piece of bicycling gear: eyeglass mirror

I've attached lots of different lights, pedals, saddles, handlebar grips and other gizmos and gadgets to my bike or myself in the past 10 years.

The one thing that's given me the most pleasure is a simple rectangular eyeglass mirror that cost me less than $10.

Like my helmet, I can't leave home without it. That's the mirror in the photo at left as I'm being trailed across Kansas by my son this summer.

If you're searching for a holiday present for a bicyclist, a mirror would be a good choice. Any local bicycle store will have a good selection….

New bike path in Bellevue; Burke-Gilman update

As bicycle paths go it isn't very long, less than a half mile.

But Bellevue city officials say it will make travel safer for bicyclists and pedestrians in the Factoria shopping area of Bellevue.

A work in progress since late summer, the 124th Avenue connector trail opened this week.

The 10-foot-wide path connects the I-90 bike trail (also known as the Mountains to Sound Trail) to 124th Avenue SE.

Meanwhile, the county says only part of Burke Gilman renovation will be ready by the end of the month, and Seattle returns to court to complete the “missing link” in Ballard…

Lees-McRae College mourns death of cycling team member

Megan Baab, a freshman member of the Lees-McRae College cycling team, was struck head-on and killed while on a training ride near the North Carolina college on Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the pickup truck, a student at a nearby college, had fallen asleep at the wheel and veered into the oncoming lane.

College president Barry Buxton said she was airlifted to the Johnson City (Tennessee) Medical Center, but was unable to survive her injuries.

Phinney and Hammer among 19 named to Olympic Track long teams

Taylor Phinney and Sarah Hammer are among the 19 cyclists named to the “long team” for track cycling at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The final list of racers who will represent the US at the track cycling events will be chosen from the pool of 11 women and 8 men by USA Cycling.

Two western Washington cyclists made the women's squad: Jennie Reed of Seattle and Tela Crane of Sammamish.

Senior year project; cross-country bicycle tour

An Alabama high school student is spending the fall semester of his senior year bicycling across the US.

Glyn Glover, 19, suffers from ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Following an RV driven by his mother, he's promoting awareness about the disease on his cross-country bike trip.

Glover, a top-ranked high school football player, was diagnosed with the condition in 2009. He keeps it in check by staying on a strict diet that eliminates as much sugar, fat and processed foods as possible.

But medications he'd been taking to fight some side-effects of the disease caused a severe seizure …

Kirkland to buy railroad corridor for future bike trail

Kirkland plans to buy its 5.5-mile section of the old Eastside railroad corridor that runs for 42 miles between Renton and Snohomish.

The city council approved the $5 million expenditure at a meeting Tuesday night. The final purchase would come through in March.

The abandoned railroad route could be improved into a biking and hiking trail in Kirkland, but there's talk of adding light rail or express buses to the corridor as well.

The cost of improving the abandoned railroad corridor ranges from $2.4 million to $82 million, depending on whether the path would be paved or ….
