500 honor North Carolina cyclist killed in hit & run

Update: Nov. 16 — More than 500 bicyclists showed up to honor David Vincent Sherman on the “Today We Ride for Dave” bike ride around High Point, North Carolina.

Sherman was killed by a hit and run motorist last month. The cyclists in the 25- and 50-mile rides were there to pay tribute to Sherman, bring more awareness that bicyclists have a right to the road, and seek justice. According to WXII website:

“We rode a great deal with Dave,” Don Shaw said. “We could think of no better way to pay tribute to him than have a bike ride and invite hundreds of our closest friends to participate.” …..

Bicycle-themed wall calendars for 2010

As the end of the year rolls around, it's time to consider your options for replacing that 2009 calendar or else you'll end up with a big ol' bare spot on the wall.

Here are a few bike-theme calendars that I've run across that are either inspirational, scenic, or downright erotic.

Let's start with CyclePassion, the calendar produced annually in Germany that features many of Europe's top women cyclists striking some admittedly sexy poses. Bike equipment is used as props in the photos. Many women are garbed in recycled bicycle equipment this year; just think of bicycle innertubes as a fashion statement.

That's Anna Sanchez, the under-23 National Road Champion from Spain, pictured above. ….

Five bike trails nominated for Street Views on Google Maps

We can vote early and often for our favorite bike trails in this election.

A few weeks ago Google Maps sought nominations for off-road photographic visits by its Street Views trike.

After receiving 25,000 ideas, the Google Maps staff came up with 24 finalists (trails in blue on map). They're asking us to vote for our favorites; multiple times if we feel like it.

Five bike trails have been nominated for a visit by the Google Maps Street Views trike. They are the Centennial Trail in Washington, Capital Crescent Trail in the DC area, Schuylkill River Trail in Pennsylvania, Boulder Creek Trail in Colorado, and the Stevens Creek Trail in California…

Manufacturer recalls stems used on 6 bike brands

A bike parts maker is recalling its EA30 stem used on some 6,400 bicycles in the past two years after reports that the stem can crack.

The recall by Easton Sports involves the Raleigh 2007, XXIX 700c MTN, RX1.0, Diamondback 2007, Mission, and Sortie bicycles with the EA30 stem.

The Scotts Valley, California-based company is making the recall after being notified that a stem broke, causing a minor injury to the bike rider. Easton Sports says the stem had passed all industry tests. The bike stems were made in China ….

How-to guide for bike-riding police in UK draws fire

A bicycling manual for police officers in the UK might be getting a lot of laughs over there, but bike-police training is a serious business in the US.

The Independent reports that a 93-page, 2-volume manual gives advice on how to balance to avoid a fall, and how to brake, turn and avoid the “kerb.” It reminds them to eat and drink because they will get hungry.

A taxpayers' association called it an “absurd waste of police time” and tax money. London's bike-riding Mayor Boris Johnson even took a couple of pot shots at it.

That reaction might surprise US members of the International Police Mountain Bicycle Association, which is holding its 8-day annual conference in St. Louis from May 1-8, 2010 ….
