US Bicycle Route System fund-raiser ends today

Today, May 31, is the last day to donate to the “Build it. Bike it. Be a part of it.” campaign to help fund the U.S. Bicycle Route System.

The Adventure Cycling Association launched the grassroots effort on May 1 to get small donations — $10 minimum — from those interested in bicycle traveling to raise $20,000 by the end of the month.

There's been huge interest in the program all month as they've raised $23,200 as of Friday. Their new goal is $26,000. You can help them raise it by following this US Bicycle Route System link or the box at the top right hand corner of this page …..

Basso wins 2010 Giro d'Italia

Italy's Ivan Basso won his second Giro d'Italia on Sunday, easily holding his rivals at bay in the final individual time trial in Verona.

David Arroyo, the career domestique for Caisse d'Epargne finished in 2nd place overall, and Basso teammate Vincenzo Nibali finished in 3rd. Michele Scarponi and Cadel Evans rounded out the top 5.

Gustav Larsson, a Swedish member of Team Saxo Bank, won the stage that ended in an ancient coliseum.

Basso, 32, previously won the Giro in 2006, then finished in 4th place in 2009. In between, his cycling career was interrupted by a two-year doping suspension …

Attack on final climb fails to unhinge leaders at Giro

Evans attacks

Cadel Evans attacked on Saturday's final climb in an attempt to threaten the overall supremacy of Ivan Basso as the Giro d'Italia comes to a close.

The Australian's bid failed to close much of the 4-minute gap to the overall leader. However, the 5th-place cyclist reduced time differences with his rivals so he might gain a podium position as the race ends Sunday with a 9-mile individual time trial in Verona.

Swiss cyclist Johann Tschoop, with no such designs in the General Classification, won the 110-mile stage from Bormio to Passa del Tonale that featured five climbs, including the massive Passo do Gavia …

Mountains spell doom for Giro d'Italia leader

Wearing the maglia rosa for the past week, Spain's David Arroyo handed over the leader's jersey to former champion Ivan Basso, left, after the Italian's relentless attacks on the final two climbs at the Giro d'Italia on Friday.

The Liquigas duo of Basso and Vincenzo Nibali, with hanger-on Michele Scarponi, joined up to power over the  dreaded Mortirolo summit with about 24 miles left in the race as Arroyo and all the other major contenders fell back. Then Arroyo caught up with most of his rivals on the treacherous downhill, but the Basso group created a larger gap on the final climb to Aprica.

While Scarponi won Stage 19, Basso appears poised to win the overall championship on Sunday. Friday marked the first time he has donned the leader's jersey since he won the Giro in 2006. What followed was a couple of years of investigations and suspensions for doping ….

Tour of Missouri scratched for 2010

Can David Zabriskie defend his 2009 Tour of Missouri title?  Will Mark Cavendish melt the pavement again with his high-powered sprints, or is Tyler Farrar ready to take charge?  How many cyclists will succumb during the week after not respecting the relentless steep climbs through the Ozarks?

We'll never know the answers these and other questions. Organizers canceled the Tour of Missouri as the state Tourism Commission on Thursday failed to include a $1 million stipend in its budget to keep the bike race afloat.

Event chairman Michael Weiss told the St. Louis Post Dispatch, “This may be a win for the Missouri Tourism Commission and the Governor, but a huge loss for the state of Missouri and its citizens …

Last stand for sprinters at Giro d'Italia on Stage 18

Grabbing the wheel of another team's sprinter, Andre Greipel gunned past him to his first win at the Giro d'Italia on Thursday.

Greipel is the No. 1 sprinter on the HTC-Columbia team, but the German lacked power and luck in the early stages that are designed for the sprinters.

Meanwhile, all the bike race leaders retained their positions in the battle for the maglia rosa as the 93-mile Stage 18 concluded its run from Levico Terme to Brescia. The upcoming two mountain stages on Friday and Saturday, however, are sure to change the order in the General Classification as Cadel Evans, Ivan Basso and Alexandre Vinokourov battle for the top spot now held by David Arroyo (Caisse d'Epargne)….

9-year sentence in hit & run death of California bike traveler

A judge sentenced an Illinois man to 9 years in prison for running down a 65-year-old California man on a coast-to-coast bicycle tour last summer.

Jim Gafney, left, of Chula Vista, California, was more than half way along on his “Mad As Hell Bike Ride Across the US” to deliver a petition to Washington DC when he was struck down on an Illinois highway.

Gafney had taken to riding his bicycle at night because of an oppressive hot spell sweeping the midwest. The driver later told police that he saw Gafney when he crested a hill on US 50 but was unable to stop his 1997 Nissan Altima  in time. He was arrested later by police ….

Long day in saddle for Giro cyclists; little change among leaders

French cyclist Damien Monier attacked his breakaway compatriots on the final climb to win Stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday.

His first ever win after 8 years as a pro came more than 10 minutes ahead of the battlers for the overall leaders' jersey crossed the finish line in Pejo Terme at the end of the 107- bike race from Brunico.

The chasing group contained all the leaders, including the maglia rosa David Arroyo, Ivan Basso (2nd), Richie Porte (3rd), and Cadel Evans (4th).

Basso's Liquigas team took control of that group toward the end of the state to prevent any attacks from getting away …

Armstrong returns to Tour of Luxembourg next week; reports of drug probe

After crashing out early at the Amgen Tour of California last week, Lance Armstrong now says he'll ride for Team RadioShack at the four-stage Tour of Luxembourg that begins next Tuesday Wednesday.

Meanwhile, two reporters for the New York Times write that two unidentified sources told them that a federal drug probe into Armstrong and other cyclists accused by Floyd Landis might be broadened to include a fraud investigation.

Whether or not Armstrong used performance enhancing drugs, which he has vehemently denied for years, it will be interesting to see whether the distractions posed by reports of  investigations will detract from his performance at Tour of Luxembourg and the Tour de France in July ….

Giro rivals crawl uphill back into contention

Former Giro d'Italia champion Stefano Garzelli proved he's still a powerful climber as he won the unrelenting 8-mile individual time-trial to the summit of Plan de Corones on Tuesday.

Cadel Evans, Ivan Basso and Alexandre Vinokourov were among those gaining seconds in their battle to win the leader's jersey as the Giro kicked off its last week with the steep climb. David Arroyo (Caisse d'Epargne) held onto to his lead, although he saw it drop by about a minute to some of his rivals.

The challenge continues on Wednesday with another mountaintop finish on Stage 17 after a mid-race climb up and over Passo delle Palade ….
