Schwinn Vestige — new materials for a venerable bicycle brand

For those of you who like to check the freshest thing, here's something very new from a brand that's very old.

At first glance this Schwinn Vestige might look your typical hip commuter bike. But closer inspection of its “ingredients” will reveal that the frame is actually made from biodegradable flax fibers and covered with water soluble paint.

Further, the grips and fenders are fashioned from bamboo and the Schwalbe tires use a recyclable rubber insert.

No wonder this eco-friendly bicycle received the 2010 Eurobike Gold Award for innovative design last week ….

Quote: “Bicycles in Africa…”

“Bicycles in Africa, especially in this part of Zambia, they are more valuable than a vehicle, because they use them even for grinding mill, they use them for transport to the hospital, to the clinic and to the school.”

School headteacher Michael Gogolola explaining the value of bicycles provided to schoolchildren by World Bicycle Relief; “Bicycles offer a lifeline in rural Zambia,” CNN, Sept. 8, 2010 (with video). …

Spanish cyclist dominates the field in the Vuelta a Espana

Spain's Igor Anton reclaimed the red leader's jersey at the Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday with an explosive attack on the summit finish that also earned him a second stage win.

Having just lost the red jersey on Tuesday after leading the race for two days, it looked like Anton had run out of gas at the bottom on the 6-mile climb to the finish of Stage 11.

He survived with the overall leaders such as the red jersey Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) and Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas), however, then found his legs by attacking ….

Bicyclist intentionally struck by hit-and-run driver in Missouri

A Warrensburg, Missouri, man is hospitalized with serious injuries after the driver of a Jeep appeared to swerve to hit the man and then fled the scene.

I'm not letting this incident renew my rejected stereotype that Missouri is not friendly toward bicyclists. I just have to remember that this hit-and-run in the western part of the state happened the same day that the community of Hannibal was trying to help out a cross-country bike traveler whose bike and gear had been stolen.

Witnesses said that Michael Martin, 53, was riding his LeMond bicycle east on Business Route 50 when the Jeep approached late Friday morning. One witness told the Daily Star Journal newspaper ….

New leader at the Vuelta a Espana

Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez finally broke the tie with Igor Anton on Tuesday to take the overall lead of the Vuelta a Espana.

The Katusha cyclist won 2 seconds in an intermediate sprint on the 108-mile race to Vilanova i la Geltru. He had been ranked second place to red jersey wearer Anton for the past two stages even though they shared the same overall time.

Meanwhile, the Caisse d'Epargne cycling team marked a repeat stage victory when Imanol Erviti attacked the all-day breakaway about 12 miles from the finish and survived by more than 30 seconds …..

Bike recovered: Life imitates art for bike theft victim in Mark Twain's hometown

When Ty Robinson paused in Hannibal, MO, to visit the hometown of Mark Twain on his cross-country bicycle tour, little did he realize how closely his visit would resemble an episode in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”

While Robinson, a 29-year-old resident of North Bend, WA, took a nap in a Hannibal park last Tuesday morning, someone stole his Fuji touring bicycle and all his gear. A newspaper article on Thursday drew attention to his plight and the community came to his support.

Now Robinson has been reunited with his treasured bicycle. Local resident Billy Kemph found the bicycle stowed away in the caves just outside of town.

It's eerily similar to the closing chapters …

Ghost bike dedicated to bicyclist on cross-country charity ride

There's a white ghost bike decorated with flowers alongside a highway that passes through the Laguna Pueblo Reservation in New Mexico.

It marks the location where 19-year-old John Anczarski, right, was struck and killed by a motorist in mid-June. The Ringgold, PA, resident and student at University of Colorado was riding cross-country with three friends to raise funds for breast cancer research when the tragedy happened.

This Labor Day weekend, a small group of friends, family, and a local bicycling group gathered to honor the man and dedicate the site. Jennifer Buntz, president of the Duke City Wheelmen Foundation …
