Vincenzo Nibali refused to be beaten down on the steep slopes of the Bella del Mundo on Saturday and survived the last mountain stage of the Vuelta a Espana in first place overall.
Try as he might, challenger Ezequiel Mosquera couldn't put away Nibali on the final climb. Mosquera at one point had a 20-second lead over the Italian near the summit, but Nibali battled back in the fog and finished right on Mosquera's wheel.
Barring a catastrophe in the final stage, Nibali is set to win the Vuelta championship on Sunday in Madrid.

George Hincapie will be cycling on his home turf this weekend when he defends his US Cycling Pro Road Race Championship title this Sunday in Greenville, S.C.
The 112-mile race includes four climbs up and over Paris Mountain, which looms as the highest Blue Ridge Mountain summit in this region of South Carolina. In spite of a bum knee suffered during the Tour of Utah last month, Hincapie has an advantage here because that ascent serves as a training ride for the 37-year-old cyclist.
Meanwhile, the field for the national time trial on Saturday is wide open because four-time defending champion David Zabriskie is cycling in the peloton for the penultimate stage of the Vuelta a Espana.

Generally, I'm not much of a fan of movie sequels (unless it's the upcoming Harry Potter), but “Race Across the Sky 2010” sounds promising.
This is the second year in a row that the Leadville 100 mountain bike race has been immortalized for release in theaters.
Following the slipstream of its success with a documentary on the 2009 race, “Race Across the Sky 2010” will be shown in some 500 theaters nationwide on Nov. 4 (that's a Thursday).

The combined efforts of bicycle advocates and city staffs to encourage bicycling has paid off in 18 cities this fall as the League of American Bicyclists announced the latest round of Bicycle-Friendly Communities.
Two of them — Baltimore and Knoxville — must be given credit for hanging in there to earn the award on their third attempt.
All the cities — there are representatives from north, south, east and west — earned their entrance at the lowest bronze level. Now they can work toward the goal of a silver, gold or platinum level designation. Only Portland, Ore., Davis, Calif., and Boulder, Colo., are at the highest level.
