Year in and year out, the name Paul O. Wantzelius always has been listed on the roster of cyclists riding the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.
For at least a decade, Wantzelius and Jerry Baker have been the only two cyclists riding the STP in consecutive years who were among the original 70 riders on the 200-mile bike ride the first time in 1979.
Wantzelius passed away in Hope, BC, on his way home from the Tour de Lacs bike ride in eastern Washington last month.
The Maple Valley resident had just announced his retirement from Boeing ….

A Japanese bicyclist traveling around the world to draw attention to his home country's neglected bamboo forests is recovering from a mild concussion after he was struck by a car.
Takashi Matsumoto was riding his fully loaded bamboo bicycle near Goreville, Illinois, Friday morning when he was struck from behind by a motorist driving an SUV.
Matsumoto, 33, was knocked into a ditch and suffered a concussion. He was rushed to Carbondale Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Although Lance Armstrong will be limiting his pro cycling in 2011 to the Tour Down Under and a few domestic races, he'll be competing for a triathlon championship on the world stage.

USA Cycling and the US Bicycling Hall of Fame partnered this year to honor Taylor Phinney and Mara Abbott as their first-ever USA Cycling Athletes of the Year.
The award recognizes the top male and female cyclists in the USA Cycling's National Development Program. Phinney and Abbott both marked their careers in development this past year with big wins.
