Could a Canadian win the Giro d’Italia on Sunday?

Forget the fact that Canadian cyclist Ryder Hesjedal collapsed onto the ground sucking wind at the mountaintop finish of Stage 19 at the Giro d’Italia today.

The 31-year-old cyclist from Vancouver destroyed his rivals on the final climb on Friday, including race leader Joaquim Rodriguez and Italians Ivan Basso and Michele Scarponi, both former Giro champions.

Hesjedal sits in second place overall. The Garmin Barracuda cyclist stands a good chance of becoming the first Canadian to win the Giro championship on Sunday …

Bicycle fatalities at the heart of new website

The League of American Bicyclists has launched a new website — Every Bicyclist Counts — that seeks to document each and every traffic-related bicycle fatality in the U.S.

It’s supposed to serve as a memorial to the cyclists who have died, gain information about the crashes, and track what happens in the courts after the crash.

In the process, I hope it doesn’t just scare the bejesus out of fledgling bicyclists who are considering more frequent riding. …

Not sure if this was done in response to National Bicycle Month, but the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has re-issued 10 bicycle and bicycle accessory recalls.

The most prevalent wildlife in Pacific Northwest

I’ve seen the occasional deer on my bike rides through the forests of the Pacific Northwest, but the “wildlife” I come across most often is the slug.

They’re a common sight slithering across trails here, leaving behind a glistening track as evidence of their passing.

I’ve never consciously run over one. Yes, I brake for …
