Unfortunately, bicycle thefts are so commonplace that they don’t deserve mention. This one is an exception.
A Brockton, Massachusetts, man was hospitalized on Sunday after he was attacked by a man wielding sausage links and a wrench.
The victim told police that he was riding his bicycle on Sunday morning when “a man came up …

Last week’s announcement of the US road cycling squad for the London Olympics included many of the fresher faces in cycling.
That’s great that the younger cyclists get a chance, but if you’re like me, then you probably wondered why so many of the “old pros” were left off the final list.
Cyclists such as Tyler Farrar, Timmy Duggan, Taylor Phinney, Tejay van Garderen, and Chris Horner (the only older pro) are certainly all deserving.
But how about long-time pros like George Hincapie …

The 31st edition of the Race Across America got underway at noon on Wednesday, and by Friday morning the leading bicyclists had crossed California, Arizona and were well into Utah.
No sooner will I file this than Reto Schoch, the leading cyclist from Switzerland, could be rolling into Cortez, Colorado — 814 miles into the 3,000-mile crossing. Friday morning he was averaging 18.32 mph so far.

The route-meisters for this week’s Ride the Rockies bike tour revised Friday’s final day route to bypass the High Park wildfire that’s blackened 47,000 acres west of Fort Collins.
Earlier in the week, organizers of the six-day tour of 2,000 bicyclists thought they might have to find another final destination or cancel the last day’s ride altogether.
The new route simply leaves Estes Park on Friday morning and heads further east before heading north to Fort Collins …

Lance Armstrong is back on the hot seat, and we’re not talking about the tri-bike saddle that he’s been riding since he left pro cycling.
The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has brought formal doping charges against the 7-time Tour de France champion, alleging that Armstrong, team manager Johan Bruyneel, a team trainer and three doctors are involved in a doping conspiracy that dates back to 1998.
Armstrong has been the target of doping accusations throughout his later career, but charges have never been brought. Armstrong steadfastly has denied any and all reports of doping and always points out that he’s never failed a drug test.

Don’t be left out this year. The Cascade Bicycle Club is reopening online registration for the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic at 12:01 a.m. (that’s one minute after midnight) on Monday.
The popular 200-mile bike ride from Seattle to Portland sold out on Feb. 21 this year when the last of 10,000 registrations were snatched up.
Enough of those early birds have requested refunds, however, that Cascade is reopening registration ….

Bob Lee plans to embark on the third and final leg of his perimeter bicycle travels — Ride for 3 Reasons — around the continental United States this fall to raise money for three charities.

See June 14 update: New route for Ride the Rockies will avoid fire zone
Five high mountain passes and 24,937 vertical feet of climbing can’t stop the 2000 cyclists on the Ride the Rockies bicycle tour this week in Colorado, but a wild land fire can.
The High Park Fire has burned about 43,000 acres …

The record-setting cycling career of George Hincapie will end after the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado this August. The 39-year-old member of the BMC Racing team made the announcement on Monday.
The August retirement will enable him to compete in his 17th Tour de France this year, the most ever by a cyclist.
Over that span at Le Tour, he’s helped teammates win the championship nine times …

The US Postal Service gives a nod to exercise and fuel-effecient transportation with its release of four postage stamps depicting different styles of bicycling.
The set of “forever” stamps were released officially in Minneapolis last week. That stung some folks in Portland, where they were still celebrating after taking over the No. 1 spot from Minneapolis in Bicycling magazine’s list of top cities for bicycling.
Commuter or bike traveler?
