Cross-country bike travelers experience horror in theater shooting

Here’s a photo of a couple of college-age bicyclists who don’t appear to have a care in the world as they set out from Virginia Beach in early June on a cross-country bike adventure.

Six weeks later they’re sitting in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater where a man opens fire on the crowd with assault …

Heat relief for RAGBRAI arrives with torrential thunderstorms

The triple digit heat that plagued the 10,000 bicycle riders in the 40th Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) was erased on Wednesday by overnight thunderstorms.

Although touted as one of the easier RAGBRAI’s in terms of terrain, the weather appears to present the biggest challenge on this year’s 471-mile bike tour.

Iowa is in the midst of a severe drought that threatens …

RAGBRAI bike tour celebrating 40th birthday this week

You know how it goes: One day it’s just a small event with a couple of hundred people along for the ride. Then the next thing you know it’s 40 years old with thousands of bike riders joining in.

Sky-high finish at the Tour de France

The sight of yellow jersey wearer Bradley Wiggins helping set up the lead-out train for Mark Cavendish at the Tour de France finale indicates the teamwork that made Sky Procycling such a success this year.
Sky’s sprinter Cavendish rode away from the peloton for the stage win on the Champs Elysees on Sunday, marking his 4th career victory in Paris and his 23rd career victory in the Tour.

Asked after the race about the victory, a joyous Cavendish clicked of the team’s half-dozen stage victories at the race and said, “The win today put the cherry on top.” …

This Tour de France was over in the first week

Looking back, this Tour de France pretty much ended the day Bradley Wiggins slipped into the yellow jersey way back on Stage 7.

He had sat quietly in 2nd place all week, 7 seconds behind the overall leader Fabian Cancellara who won the prologue, while the sprinters crashed and battled for stage wins. Then on …

Rest in peace, Cookie Lady

Just learned the sad news that June Curry, the “Cookie Lady,” died on Monday at age 91.

This wonderful lady was the personal friend to the thousands of touring bicyclists who passed through Afton, Virginia, on the Trans America Bicycle Route since its inception in 1976. The walls of her home were papered with postcards …

Tandem trike for disabled bicycling

When I showed up at the Foothills Trail in Pierce County (WA) last week, I was surprised to see this rig rolling off the end of the trail.

Never having seen such a trike-trailer-bike-tandem self-propelled vehicle before (I really didn’t know how to describe what I was seeing), I briefly talked to the owner and …

Bad day for defending Tour champ as teammate improves

It looks like it’s all over for defending Tour de France champion Cadel Evans, as he struggled on three mountain passes in Stage 16 on Wednesday and dropped from 4th to 7th in the overall battle for 1st place.

Evans’ teammate Tejay Van Garderen (a native of Tacoma, Washington) also lost some time on the leaders, but did well enough that he moved up one place into 6th overall.

While Evans’ BMC teammates rallied around their suffering leader in an attempt to help him to the finish, Van Garderen was allowed to ride ahead to solidify his lead in the white jersey competition for best young rider.
