Someone asked me recently if I was going to do any bicycle touring this summer, and I realized that I hadn’t really thought about it.
Too often my bike tours are last-minute decisions, and I end up filling my panniers with anything within reach and roll down the driveway toward the John Wayne Pioneer rail-trail.
Visiting the Seattle Bicycle Expo this weekend, however, I got the lowdown on the ever-growing Olympic Discovery Trail on the Olympic Peninsula. …
If you chose to ride your bike on Saturday instead of going to the Seattle Bicycle Expo — and who could blame you considering the nice weather — well, there’s always Sunday.
This is one of the first times that I can remember showing up to the Smith Cove Terminal 91 expo site without full-on …
Automobile maker Volvo says they’ve developed a new safety system that detects bicyclists and automatically applies the brakes if the bicyclist veers into the path of the car.
I thought all cars already had such a safety device — it’s called the driver.
If motorists pay attention to the road in front of them, and I know that is a big “if” sometimes, then they can stop their cars if they see a bicyclist veer into their path. ….
If you’re like me, you can’t believe that it’s already time for the Seattle Bike Expo to roll around.
The big event sponsored by the local Cascade Bicycle Club is returning to the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
What I like about this show is that it offers something for every type of bicyclist. Speedy triathletes to pokey recreational cyclists to urban commuters to dirt lovers will all find something of interest among the 250 vendor booths and hours of presentations. …
The Washington state legislator who told a constituent that hard-breathing bicyclists cause pollution has apologized for his statement.
Republican Rep. Ed Orcutt of Kalama wrote:
“First of all, let me apologize for the carbon emission line of an email which has caused so much concern within the bicycle community. It was over the top and …
When I read about a Washington legislator’s response to the proposed tax on bicycle sales, I honestly thought it was someone’s elementary attempt at sarcasm.
Wrong again.
State Rep. Ed Orcutt, a Republican representing Kalama down in Cowlitz County, says bicycle riding is not an environmentally friendly activity. He wrote to a constituent:
Missouri Rep. Bart Korman has gone ahead and filed his bicycle ban bill that we wrote about earlier this week: “Proposal for bicycle ban raised in Missouri.”
Korman filed House Bill 672 on Wednesday. It prohibits bicycle use on state roads when there is a state-operated bike path or trail running generally parallel and within …
What’s this? Tucked into a proposal by Washington state House Democrats to fund expansive highway projects is a provision to tack an extra $25 fee onto the sale of any bicycle costing more than $500.
The arrangement should be known as the Wal-Mart Protection Act, as only bicycle-shaped objects sold by mass merchandisers would be exempt from the fee as they don’t sell bikes costing more than $500 in the first place.
Local bike stores will be the ones harmed by imposing the fee as it cuts into their sales margins or could convince potential customers to go online to buy their next bike.
The total revenue from the bicycle sales fee is infinitesemal when compared to the total amount that House Democrats want to raise to pay for more and wider expressways …

See update: Feb. 21, 2013 — Missouri legislator goes ahead and files bike ban bill
Here we are, less than two weeks after the Colorado Supreme Court overturned a bicycle ban in the town of Black Hawk, and the issue of banning bicycles from the roadway is back again — this time in Missouri.
The around-the-world bicycling travels of a British couple ended tragically in Thailand after they were struck and killed by a pickup truck.
Peter Root and Mary Thompson, both 34, had been traveling since July 2011 when they embarked by ferry from Guernsey, an island in the English Channel, to France to begin an around the …
