Victory for bicycle projects in Missouri

What is it about some Missouri politicians? They seem to think they can make political hay out of proposing laws that stick it to bicyclists.

Four years ago it was some council members in St. Charles County who wanted to ban bicycling on some county roads. The issue lost support of the majority on council, …

Update Jan. 6, 2015 — Workers are shooting for the Green River Trail to reopen in Kent by the end of January 2015, weather permitting. Basically some hand-rail work needs to be completed above the riverbank and some equipment is still using the trail. Meanwhile, the Interurban Trail detour is still open.

Closed road through California’s Devil’s Slide reopens as bike trail

We’ve all heard about rails to trails. How about roads to trails?

That is what happened to the old Highway 1 through the scenic Devil’s Slide overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The state last year moved Highway 1 (aka Cabrillo Highway) up the slope and through a set of tunnels. San Mateo County restored the old …

“Opening Day” for trails is this coming Saturday

Today marked my best bike ride of the year as I headed out the 17-mile Cedar River Trail between Renton and Landsburg. Blue skies, almost no breeze, temperature in the 60s, blossoms on the trees and the river running cold and fast.

It reminded me that Rails-to-Trails Conservancy celebrates its annual Opening Day for Trails …

A cross-country bicycle tour that’s for the birds

Dorian Anderson, PhD, was riding his bicycle around Sawgrass Lake County Park near St. Petersburg the other day. He’s a long way from his latest home in Boston, and he’s enjoying the warm weather.

He’s not interested in getting a tan, though, and he’s not much interested in the road, either.

Anderson is keeping his …

Huge economic impact from paved trail network in Ohio

It’s been reported time and again that biking and hiking trails draw users to healthy outdoor pursuits and stimulate the economy. We can see those findings again in a study conducted along the 330-mile network of trails in the Miami Valley in southwestern Ohio.
