Snow plow crews on the North Cascades Highway completed the six-week-long job of clearing snow from the highway this week, as the state Department of Transportation made its annual spring announcement that traffic is now open on State Route 20.

The high elevation route across northern Washington also is part of the Northern Tier Bicycle …

That Seattle bike share system that’s due to launch this fall has a new name: Pronto! Cycle Share Presented by Alaska Airlines.

It was formerly known as Puget Sound Bike Share. That entity remains as the official nonprofit owner/operator of the system, but the system itself will go by the new name.

Seattle-based Alaska Airlines …

May is National Bike Month — let’s celebrate

As Thursday marked the first day of National Bike Month, and we had spectacular weather in the Pacific Northwest, I decided to mark the occasion by exploring the bike trails around Wilkeson.

The old town, by Washington standards, is on the way to the Carbon River Entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. It’s economy was …

Washington state: Still most bike friendly after all these years

The League of American Bicyclists named Washington state the most bicycle-friendly state for the 7th year in a row.

While other states have been rising and dropping on the list announced annually since 2008, Washington state has remained the first and only state to hold top honors every year.

In fact, Minnesota pulled itself …

Last weekend to ride entire East Lake Sammamish Trail before construction

This weekend will be your last chance for about a year to ride the entire length of the 11-mile-long East Lake Sammamish Trail that links the communities of Redmond, Sammamish and Issaquah.

The 2.5-mile north Sammamish segment will be closed beginning Monday so contractors can begin upgrading the narrow gravel trail into a 12-foot-wide paved …

Access to mountain biking trail limited for 3 summers by road construction

Good news: The long-awaited paving of the deteriorated Middle Fork Snoqualmie River Road into the remote valley east of North Bend will finally get underway in May.

Bad news: It will be difficult — and at times impossible — for mountain bikers, hikers and equestrians to get out to the Middle Fork Snoqualmie Trailhead for …

More cycle tracks and greenways in Seattle’s bicycling future

Seattle is taking another stab at improving bicycling in the city in an updated Bicycle Master Plan that relies heavily on cycle tracks and greenways — two schemes not promoted in the original master plan approved in 2007.

The idea is to entice potential bike riders who are not particularly interested in mixing it up …

Bridging the gap on Chehalis-Western Trail in Lacey

When I stumbled across this scene on Sunday, I thought I had come upon one of the many road construction projects in Seattle.

But no, I was in Lacey, a neighbor of Olympia. Asking around, I learned that this construction job is actually a bicycle-pedestrian bridge that will complete the final missing link in the …

Women-only bike rides gain popularity; 20 listed here

Women’s bicycling is growing, there’s no doubt about that. Such advocacy organizations as the League of American Bicyclists and the Cascade Bicycle Club in Seattle are pushing to get more women involved in all aspects of riding — especially commuting and recreation.

One aspect of that has been the growth of women-only bicycle rides.

While …
