RAGBRAI — where Armstrong is still welcome

Disgraced pro cyclist Lance Armstrong is returning to the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) next Sunday when more than 20,000 cyclists pull out of Rock Valley for the cross-state ride.

It’s one of the few places he’s felt comfortable after authorities stripped him of 7 Tour de France titles for doping.

This will …

Cyclists made first century bike ride on penny farthings

Ten thousand cyclists are preparing for either back-to-back centuries or a 1-day double century in the Seattle-to-Portland Bicycle Classic (STP) this weekend.

The root of the event — the century bike ride — was first documented by two guys on penny farthings more than 130 years ago.

Today, most recreational bicyclists target the goal as they become …

Skyrocketing airline fees for bicycles

At the same time that Amtrak is improving its policies for carrying bicycles, the airlines are continuing to jack up prices on bicycles as baggage.

Washington Post says that as airlines lump extra charges on passengers, they’re going overboard on those who carry bicycles.

Many airlines now charge $150 to $200 each way to carry bicycles. …

My guidebook — Best Bike Rides Seattle — is now available

Back in April 2012 an editor from Falcon Guides contacted me to see if I’d be interested in writing a guidebook about the best Seattle area bike rides.

I’d be responsible for choosing 40 bike routes, writing a chapter about each ride, taking at least two photos for each ride, and producing a map and a cue sheet for each …

British filmmaker explains the revival of bicycling

Why is the bicycle back in fashion? That’s the question that British filmmaker Michael B. Clifford tries to answer in the film, “Bicycle – A Great British Movement.”

The 90-minute documentary tells the story from the British perspective, but we can easily argue that the bicycle is also undergoing a rebirth in the US.

The documentary premieres …

More roll-on, roll-off bike service coming to Amtrak

More options for bicycle travel are in the offing as Amtrak says it is installing baggage cars with bicycle racks on all 15 of its long-distance routes by the end of the year.

The upgrade means that bicyclists can roll their rides onto the baggage cars and hang the bikes on the vertical racks. No more …
