Bicycle rights as seen in “Portlandia”

Here's a bike messenger, right down to his freshly skinned forearm, asserting his rights on the streets of Portland in the new comedy series “Portlandia.”

The six-episode series premieres at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT Friday on cable network IFC.

The show is the creation of Fred Armisen of Saturday Night Live and singer-musician Carrie Brownstein, who set about to poke a little fun at the city and its inhabitants. They both say they love Portland,  but can find it to be a little quirky.

The show features satirical portraits of people you'd find in the city, such as this bicyclist.

Yes, he's pretty ridiculous, and I cringed to hear him utter some comments that I've made to drivers in the past.

Brownstein explained the show to a New York City TV station:

“I think Portland embodies a certain idealism and a kind of internal contradiction that a lot of sort of progressive-minded people are dealing with, which is that they want to do good but they're so flummoxed by how to do good and that creates just a straight conflict.”
