Although Lance Armstrong will be limiting his pro cycling in 2011 to the Tour Down Under and a few domestic races, he'll be competing for a triathlon championship on the world stage.
Coach Chris Carmichael says that Armstrong will compete in the 2011 Ironman World Championships at Kona, Hawaii, on Oct. 8, 2011.
The event requires that participants swim 3.8 km (2.3 miles), ride 180 km (111 miles) and run a 26-mile marathon (42.4 km).
Armstrong was a championship swimmer as a child and has run marathons in New York City in recent years. His abilities as a cyclist are well-documented.
Armstrong won 7 Tours de France during this pro cycling career. He retired between 2005 and 2008, during which he trained for and ran in marathons. Returning to cycling in 2009, he finished in 3rd place at the Tour that year.
