Matt Damon to narrate Lance Armstrong cycling documentary

Actor Matt Damon, left, has long been mentioned as the leading candidate for a starring role in a motion picture about the life of Lance Armstrong.

But he's officially on board as narrator of the upcoming documentary about Armstrong's comeback attempt for an 8th Tour de France victory in 2009.

The film is being produced by Alex Gibney. His most recent work, “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer,” tells about the case against former New York governor's involvement with a prostitution ring.

In an interview with the LA Times, Gibney says his Armstrong documentary, set for release in 2011, is also about a controversial figure:

“There is, at least from the public perspective, a big disparity of opinion on him. Some people hold him up to be a saint. Particularly if you're a cancer survivor or cancer patient, he provides enormous hope. Other people see in him a kind of hypocrisy, and hypocrisy drives people crazy, particularly if they make money off it.”

That public perception may become more focused as the investigation continues into Floyd Landis's allegations of doping by Armstrong and his teammates continues. Gibney says he can't put off the documentary until this latest chapter plays out, however.

Meanwhile, the LA Times says that Armstrong motion picture to be produced by Frank Marshall is still on the back-burner.

Marshall, whose credited with producing or directing such blockbusters as the Bourne series and Indiana Jones, has been talking about an Armstrong movie for six years or more. It's still listed as “in production.”
