Civia Cycles is recalling 800 bicycle forks because of reports that they can crack or break.
The Bloomington, Minnesota-based importer issued the recall with the Consumer Product Safety Commission after receiving three reports of the forks cracking or breaking.
The carbon fiber forks were installed on Hyland bicycles made in Taiwan that sold for $1,675 to $3,000 between April 2008 and February 2010. Sold separately, the Civia Carbon forks cost about $195.
Civia reports that all known users have been notified and warned to stop riding the bicycles with the faulty forks. Owners can contact a Civia Cycles dealer for a replacement steel fork.
Contact Civia Cycles toll fee at 877-774-6208 between 8 – 6 ET Monday through Friday, or visit the Civia Cycles website.
Civia Cycles explained at its blog:
“We've conducted 3rd party testing and have concluded that the problem we're seeing is the fork was designed to be stiff so that under braking, the legs would not wander around creating a noodly fork feel. An unanticipated by-product of this leg stiffness is that the fork legs aren't moving at all during regular braking and in turn, all of the braking force is passed up to the crown. These forces are over time will lead to potential failure.”
Consumers will be refunded the difference in cost between the carbon fiber and replacement steel fork.
