If Paolo Savoldelli can hang on for a few more days, he might have this Giro d' Italia in the bag.
The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team captain — in the absense of Lance Armstrong — is beginning to consider a win after retaining the overall leader's pink jersey on Wednesday on the 130-mile bicycle race from Lissone to Varazze. The 31-year-old Italian won the Giro in 2002.
Major obstacles that remain: a time trial, the gut-wrenching climb up the Colle delle Finestre on Saturday's stage to Sestriere, and anything strange that might occur before the race ends Sunday.
Trailing Savoldelli is Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas-Bianchi) by 25 seconds and mountain specialist Gilberto Simoni (Lampre-Caffita) by 1 minute, 48 seconds, according to CyclingNews.
The winner of today's stage was Christophe Le Mevel of Credit Agricole in 4 hours and 50 minutes. He was part of a breakaway at about the 60-mile mark.
