Stomach ailment punctures favorite's goal in Giro d' Italia

More mountains and more suffering at the Giro d' Italia Sunday, especially for Ivan Basso.

A favorite to win the Giro, the leader of the CSC team achieved the overall leader's jersey about four days ago as soon as the race moved into the mountains. The agony brought on by the mountains on Saturday, however, was compounded by stomach ailments, which caused him to lose time — and the pink jersey. On Sunday, he still couldn't eat or drink, and finished 44 minutes behind the stage winner, Colombian Ivan Parra.

Parra, his second win in as many days, covered the mountainous 130-mile stage from Egna – Livigno in 6 hours and 46 minutes.

Still holding the leader's pink jersey is Paolo Savoldelli, the leader of the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team and winner of the 2002 Giro. He holds a 25-second leader over Danilo Di Luca, and 1 minute and 48 seconds over Gilberto Simoni, another favorite to win.

Full results of the stage are available at CyclingNews and VeloNews; on cable TV, OLN broadcasts the Giro live on Saturdays and Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. (ET).
