Update: Nov. 16 — More than 500 bicyclists showed up to honor David Vincent Sherman on the “Today We Ride for Dave” bike ride around High Point, North Carolina.

Sherman was killed by a hit and run motorist last month. The cyclists in the 25- and 50-mile rides were there to pay tribute to Sherman, bring more awareness that bicyclists have a right to the road, and seek justice. According to WXII website:

“We rode a great deal with Dave,” Don Shaw said. “We could think of no better way to pay tribute to him than have a bike ride and invite hundreds of our closest friends to participate.”

Many cyclists have been questioning the low bond set for the driver, Grayson Dawson, 48, of Eden, who has a spotty driving record.

She's charged with felony hit and run, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving while her license was revoked, according to the News-Record. She turned herself in several days after the fatality; unsecured bond was set at $5,000.

Record

Troopers say a Dodge Durango was traveling on a road north of Greensboro on Oct. 24 when it crossed the centerline and hit Sherman head-on. The driver made a U-turn and fled from the scene. Two witnesses identified the vehicle and troopers seized the SUV from Dawson's driveway two days later.

The News-Record reports that Dawson has court records from 2007 for failure to appear in court on charges of driving with no operator’s license, having no insurance, speeding and driving the wrong way on a two-lane road. She had pleaded guilty in 2003 for driving without a license.

Memorial ride

Sherman was a 55-year-old vice president at Sealy Mattress Co., and avid bicyclist and runnner, as well as a violinist in the Greensboro Philharmonia.

The memorial ride loop left from the High Point Regional Hospital. Riders opted for 25- or 50-mile loops and were encouraged to donate to the Yield to Life bike safety organization.
