“Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever.”

The text message that Astana team manager Johan Bruyneel sent to Lance Armstrong after the American cyclist broke his collarbone at the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon bike race in March. Bruyneel told a Belgian magazine that Armstrong considered abandoning his comeback at the time.

Armstrong underwent surgery to the shattered bone, which was held together with a 4.5-inch plate and 12 screws, heeded Bruyneel's advice, and returned to racing with the Tour of the Gila in April where he finished 8th.

He later went on to race in the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, where he finished 3rd.
