You should dig out your bicycling pictures as two non-profits are sponsoring photo contests this fall.
The Adventure Cycling Association is looking for photos that “capture the beauty and wonder” of bike travel for its 1st Annual Bicycle Travel Photo Contest.
The non-profit's blog goes on to say:
“We are especially interested in images that showcase the wide range of bike touring experiences: road and dirt riding, rural and urban settings, scenery, people and their emotions.”
The winning image will be printed in the March 2010 issue of Adventure Cycling magazine and be featured on the Adventure Cycling website.
Oct. 8 update: The Alliance for Biking and Walking also is sponsoring a photo contest. They're seeking photos in 7 categories: Biking, Walking, Biking and Walking, Complete Streets, Advocates in Action, Youth, Inspirational. Prizes include an all-expense paid trip to Tuscany and a year's supply of Clif Bars. Here's the link to the People Powered Photo Contest.
Photos
Most traveling bicyclists carry a camera to capture memorable scenes or moments on their bike tours. It's easier than ever to get great quality images with digital point-and-click cameras. We can take all the pictures we need, then just delete the ones that are out of focus or redundant.
The Crazy Guy on a Bike website is a great place to find photos from bike tours.
I carried a small camera on my 1984 bike tour, but I remember that developing the pictures at the end of the summer cost a small fortune.
I don't know whether the above photo of my friend hauling his tacoed wheel across the plains of Kansas would be a contest winner, but it's one of my favorite shots from that tour. You probably have better photos from your bike travels.
Fine print stuff
Photos must be submitted to Adventure Cycling's Contests Flickr group and tagged Adventure09. The deadline is Dec. 31, 2009. There are more rules regarding photo ownership and reproduction.
You might want to head over to the bike touring group's flickr site to see photos that already have been submitted.
