Ohio's Phil Nagle finishing 48-state bike tour just shy of goal

If you're anywhere near Tipp City, Ohio, Monday  afternoon, you might want to welcome home Phil Nagle from his bike ride through 48 states.

The 23-year-old is completing his bike tour around the continental US about one week past his goal of 48 states in 48 days.

Supporters say that “strong headwinds, inclement weather and a few detours slowed his pace a bit,” but that doesn't diminish the amazing accomplishment of riding nearly 8,200 miles in what became 56 days — about 145 miles a day.

Fund-raiser

Nagle undertook the 48 states in 48 days campaign with the goal to raise $48,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in memory of his deceased uncle. (You can still donate at his fund-raising site.)

He also hopes to score a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records with his bike ride; apparently he's a shoo-in if he submits the proper paperwork.

July 20

Nagle, a recent University of Cincinnati graduate, set out on July 20. A small RV driven by friends carried his gear and served as a place to shower and sleep on the bike tour.

The Dayton Daily News interviewed Nagle on Friday while he was in Iowa. He still had to cross the Mississippi into Wisconsin, then across Illinois, hit a corner of Michigan and then ride through Indiana before arriving back home in Tipp City.

That's a heck of a weekend bike ride.

“I’ve got about 550 miles to go in two and a half days. I just plan on riding most of Saturday night, and then I’ll be home by Sunday evening — as long as the weather cooperates.”

It didn't, so he's arriving on Monday instead.

He told the reporter that he'd been fighting headwinds almost every day from Walla Walla, Washington, where he had started to head eastward. He realized in Idaho that he probably wouldn't make the 48-day goal.

According to his Facebook page, here are the directions to the Tipp City CVS parking lot where he'll be welcomed home from 6 to 8 p.m.
