This guy from Dallas sinks to a new low among motorists who weasel out of taking responsibility for their actions when they strike a bicyclist and drive away.
The 27-year-old driver crossed the centerline, struck the bicyclist head-on, stopped, dragged him off his car and stuffed him onto the floorboard in the back seat.
A police sergeant told the Dallas Morning News:
“In about 20 years of accident investigation, I've never seen anything like that.”
Hiding under car
Police arrested the driver hiding under a neighbor's car. Police reports in the Dallas Morning News say he was covered in blood when he returned home and couldn't explain what happened. His mother checked the car and saw the smashed glass and the body on the floor of the backseat.
The dead man was identifed as Ronnie Kellar, a 59-year-old handyman who rode his bicycle everywhere. He was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital, although police said if emergency medical personnel had gotten to him sooner, they might have saved his life.
Time delay
The collision happended at 9:04 p.m., based on a nearby surveillance camera; the driver's mother called 911 at 9:20 p.m.
The driver was arrested on intoxication manslaughter, failing to stop and render aid, and resisting arrest. He was being held in the Grand Prairie jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.
The driver has a criminal record for drug possession; now he can add this to his rap sheet. Maybe he should have listened to his mother when he was growing up, she obviously knows right from wrong. She's the one who called 911.
